Would it be better to go to the snack machine when one of my 5-6 meal times per day comes around and I dont have anything handy and cannot leave my work?
I know being prepared is optimal but when Im not should I starve till I can get a good protein containing meal in or keep my metabolism up with 200 empty calories?
If you don’t have something like this handy, something sugary is not going to help ‘keep your metabolism up’ at all, IMO. insulin spikes when muscles are insulin resistant = not going to help. Your body runs of primarily liver glycogen stores during periods of rest as it is.
Get a bloody bag and ALWAYS carry it with you. If nothing else, to keep the keys, wallet and phone off your pockets.
In the bag, throw in a protein bar and a piece of fruit. A bottle of water is another staple. That way, you’re always prepared to face whatever this hectic life throws at you.
I know, you weren’t asking for that, but then again, I have no idea what kind of things you have in the vending machine. If it’s something like chips, highly processed sandwiches or snickers, I’d hit it rather than ‘starve’. If it’s the sugar-laden crap with zero nutritional value and that’ll screw me up, I’d stay away and keep the money.
Or get some beef jerky, mixed nuts and some raisins. (Which is what I bring)
The vending machine at my job has stuff (read: complete crap) listed off as “healthy alternatives”. I think one was actually corn chips, but I’d have to double check.
I try to keep a box of “good” bars at my workstation, when I get down to 3-4 bars I restock. Junk verses nothing? Probably nothing for me until I could find , beg, borrow, or steal something not too sugary.
Most vending machines have peanuts usually, thats what i go for if im in a bind, you get some protein and natural fats instead of a whole lot of crap. The salty ones are high in sodium but most peanuts you get out of a vending machine is only a handful anyway.
Buy some trail mix instead of a candy bar. It’s got nuts and dried fruit, which is good for you…not empty calories. Never buy candy bars. It goes against the whole philosophy of clean eating.
The main point here is that there’s more options than just “candy bar” and “nothing”.
Depends more on how hard you are lifting. If your busting your ass in the gym and your not above 15% bodyfat the candy bar won’t do you wrong.
Unless your on a weight loss diet of course. Most candy bars don’t carry around that much damn calories. People eat them at there jobs all day every day their whole life and act like it was one candy bar that got them fat.
