Can You Guys Help Me with Math?

Simple rules to follow when multplying/dividing.

  1. two negatives equal a positive.
  2. A negative and positive are negative
  3. two positives are positive
    For order of operations i use the saying Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally.
    P= parenthesis
    E= exponents
    M= multiplication
    D= Division
    A= Addition
    S= Subtraction

Another thing that always helps me is to keep the variable positive. so if you had
-6m=48 I would make that 6m=-48. I have always found it easier to work with positive variables and keep the real numbers negative if you have to.

the shit that confuses me the most right now is trying to differentiate between a negative sign and a subtraction sign, i thought you were supposed to use captions to indicate a negative but this thing never does.

i also dont understand what the reasoning behind changing a minus sign to an addition sign or vice versa is for example ill have something like idk

Please tell us you were joking. Or that you’re in 3rd grade.
OTOH, if this is for real, at least it explains your posts :slight_smile:

If you never heard of “BEDMAS”, it can help you out with these questions when it comes to simplifying.

B - brackets
E - exponents
D - division
M - multiplication
A - addition
S - subtraction

I know you’re from Canada so it might be a little different, but in the US those are called parentheses (), not brackets . Just in case anyone’s confused.

Did anyone else notice that he put division first. I know that it makes absolutely no difference, but I find that interesting.

() are still a type of bracket. You could have () and in a math problem, and both would fall under the brackets category. Calling () parentheses is more of a programming thing really.

ummmmmm no, after this i do college algebra…which i hear is actually easier[/quote]

Ahh haha you’re gonna be in for a big surprise if you don’t have this stuff down 100% when you go into intro calculus or linear algebra.

I don’t think “college algebra” is the same as linear algebra.

I’m pretty sure that a standard college algebra deals with some basic number theory, some slightly more advanced geometry and some work with functions. It’s probably closer to a number theory or “modern algebra” class than a linear algebra class.

Easier (I think) is “Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally”.

P - Parenthesis
E - Exponents
M - Multiplication
D - Division
A - Addition
S - Subtraction

But yeah, this is really easy stuff. Their really is no difference between whether a sign means it’s a negative number or a subtraction sign.

Example:

9-8=1

or

9+(-8)=1

7(5 - 6x) - 5(9 + 8x) = 15x - 9

35 - 42x - 45 - 40x = 15x - 9

35-45-42x-40x=15x-9
-10-82x=15x-9
+9 +9

-1-82x=15x
+82x +82x
-1=97x
-1/97=x
pretty sure its right… you didnt change the sign from + to - when you did -5(9+8x) - times a + = - a very common mistake people dont catch

also if a - is on the left side of the number then think of that number as a negative

I can’t believe with how often ppl rip on you on these forums that hardly anyone has busted ur shit for this. I actually cannot believe that was on a college level quiz.

Not to be a dick but we were learning how to solve these kinds of equations in 7th and 8th grade.

thats fantastic, i didnt go to 8th grade.

its not a huge deal. its the only thing im having trouble with. for some reason the stuff which comes after this makes more sense to me.

Look at it like this- A negative number is a posative number multiplied by negative one.

When there is a negative sign before the parenthesis it is treated as if a factor of negative one has been removed from that group.

When you remove or replace that factor of neg.1, the signs change. It seens like baloney now, but when you start doing complex conjugates with imaginary numbers, it will come in handy to be good at.

I showed a guy at work that pythagorean triple and he thought I was a rocket surgeon. Later on I caught myself on fire.(by accident)

Sorry in advance if this offends someone, but I feel it applies :stuck_out_tongue:

I can’t believe no one said this till the second page.

I guess everyone wanted to show off their 1337 M@th Skilz

Maths in college… soo overrated.

Please inform us when you start with functions, derivatives, integrals and with the probability theory.
If you have questions on that I’ll dig up my highschool knowledge.

I was going to comment, but it was too easy. This is the same guy who brags about not using proper grammar and punctuation.

lol seriously. i saw a whole bunch of similar ones too those my aunt sent em to me in an email. one gave an equation and said “expand” and dude wrote the same equation like 5 times but just added more space between the signs and numbers each time.

there was one with batman, one with an elephant, …yea ill dig em up

goodbye horses
