Can We Live Forever? Part 2

“The pleasure is to play, makes no difference what you say, I don’t share your greed, the only card I need is The Ace Of Spades”

Perhaps it is unwise to toss in a verse of lyrics from the band MotorHead besides the ambitious notions of a genious like Ray Kurzweil. But then again Ray is in the music business too, selling electronic keyboards. I think Lemmy from MotorHead was in the business of selling Volume. Dem guys was loud.

So we have some people who are not interested at all in living forever and we have a relative few that believe we can extend or prolong, or in Kurzweil’s case, actually have a chance to NOT die.

As I mentioned in yesterday’s post I can’t totally dismiss his concepts. I totally agree that we are living in an age when science can keep us going for a long time yet. I find it interesting that SO many things come down to math.

When I became a fitness Coach I was actually pleasantly surprised that much of the training systems, body composition, lung capacities, and program design could be reduced to sheer numbers. Well the same thing applies to DNA and Genetic coding. All software codes. Science can tell if you are missing this and that or inherited an odd gene or are in posssesion of chromosones awry. All fascinating stuff.

Some rock and roll stars have no interest in sustaining or really enhancing their present life. A lot of creative people have a bit of a death wish. I personally have had some close calls with the grim guy myself. Largely because I burned the candle at both ends and used a blowtorch for the middle.

Looking back I am very fortunate and have rectified much of my lifestyle. When we are young we do not give death much of a thought.
Ray Kurzweil has books and info on his web site about living a little longer, and possibly forever. I always admired an optimist, but this is beyond optimism.

This is a man with a serious vision, and based on his calculations, if you take care of yourself now for the next 20 years you may have a crack at being able to take advantage of the latest technology that is ready to explode.

There is already a lot of argument going on about the ethics of stem cell research and many other bio-tech exploratory possibilities. Are we playing God?..time will tell.

Meanwhile I leave you another morsel of motorhead’s Ace of Spades. More food for thought.

“You know I’m born to lose, and gambling’s for fools, But that’s the way I like it baby,
I don’t wanna live for ever, And don’t forget the joker”

Are you cuckoo for Cocoon

Even without the deathwish or tempting fate, I wouldn’t want to live forever.

It takes too long.

And how would you know when you were done? Forever lasts forever.

At some point you have to say- “I’ve done my part. Time to go. Bye-Bye”.

By the time the body stops aging (in the 90s), would you want to live forever like that?

As I said in the last thread, I believe something betters waiting for me, so I have no desire to prolong death.

I guess to want to live on earth forever, you’d have to believe that there’s nothing better after death.

Ironically, if I thought this was all the better it’d ever get, I’d want to kill myself.

Ray Kurzweil is not the only guy to consider longevity or to promote the notion… maybe you could heap a little bit less admiration at his feet?

And why the heck do we need second thread to discuss the same subject?

The most sincere way to see how pathetic and boring a person’s life is presently and probably will be is to ask him how long he wants to live.

The majority who have fulfilling and great lives do not try to increase their span. Just for food for thought.

I forgot to mention that I hope I’m dead before technology and nature coincide like Kurzweil predicts. In fact, I hate the fact that humans even have automobiles and the related.

This probably stems from me living surrounded by fields and nature-how a true Homo Sapien should be. If Kurzweil’s prediction happens, I believe there will be no such as courage and strength and masculinity (who needs it when death, sickness, and wounds are no longer a threat). The hell with that, kill me before then.

So, I take it this is like the sequel to the other thread?

Are you planning to make this into a trillogy? Would you also consider episodes instead?

Point well taken…I didn’t have time yesterday. As far as admiration goes I love his web site , and as a musician I must say his keyboards are top notch.
Plus I like his optimism. Just having fun scribbling about stuff off topic.

thanks

No that’s it. No episodes. We can’t write forever. Great photo.

Thanks

Ummm… Isn’t the entire point of believing in a God (having a religion) to defend against death.

Human beings cannot accept the fact that we will perish physically, so we have created the best defense mechanism of all, religion.

Again, aren’t the putative benefits of believing in Christ “eternal life”??? Isn’t that why followers “eat his body and drink his blood”???

For those who get bored or dissatisfied with earthly life, why do you think that life in “Heaven” (whatever that may be) will be any more tolerable?

People are all still trying to get eternal life… even if they don’t expect it to be on Earth.

It seems counterintuitive to say “I wouldn’t want to live forever”. This is tantamount to saying that you are atheist.
