Cal's Big Log

hahaha we’ve all been there

Love the comedy boobcam. whatever it takes.

Cal, would you be so kind as to post a vid of the hip thrusts with your shoulders on the bench…I wanna try them, I’ve see the pics but I’m trying to figure out how to get under the bar with my shoulders up…um, awkward in my mind.

the grimacing face isnt bad at all… esp the intense effort to not vomit on the camera before you turned it off… love it!

Skye - will give it a shot. Not today, though - I’m off to a Christmas fair with a bunch of hairy gay men.

Cal, you are a riot!!!

Righty. Well Sunday was a blast - did the Christmas fairs at the O2 (formerly the Millennium Dome) and Hyde Park. The Hyde Park fair was great - several good rides there and (because it was German themed), lots of Gluhwein. Win! (Well, needed to the Gluhwein tbh - was cold).

Had all you can eat Tapas after with my bear friends and toddled off home. Didn’t train yesterday as a result - wasn’t hung over or anything, just tired and couldn’t be arsed.

Trained this morning instead. Loooong warm up - plate pushes, shoulder mobilisation stuff, 50 hyperextensions again (ouch).
Then off to bench.

Bench Press

1 x 20 x bar
1 x 20 x 30kg (66lbs)
5 x 5 x 60kg (132lbs)

Which means I have to put the weight up next time.

Did neck bench bridge thingies in between the 5x5 sets.

Dumbell rows

3 x 5 x 30kg (66lbs)

Superset (x3)

Body rows (10 reps)
Incline one arm push-ups (6 reps per arm)

Yeah I’m not that diesel, I did the one arm pushes on the same bar I used for the body rows which is about crotch height or so.

And that was all I had time for, bar some stretching.

You are taunting me with this. grrrr.

P.S. Nice bench

solid workout Cal! those 50 back extensions are quite impressive. and one arm push-ups? you bitch! i see that it’s incline, but that’s still some shit.

yeh, your bench is always nice and now i see 30 kg rows…excellent.

Seemed like a short workout but this morning I feel as though I’ve been run over by a steam roller. Skipped the gym (well, I woke up too late anyway). Back tomorrow.
Won’t get much training done this week as I’m visiting my ancient parents this weekend (they are old and have both had strokes so this is a stressful thing, not a nice thing, especially as my dad always insists on talking about how soon they’re going to die. Yay).

Hey Cal

Popping in to say hey. Just finished reading your log. I also have a pain in the ass ankle injury that just wont go away, I decided against surgery because they couldnt guarantee it would be fixed.

Hey Cal, you have a killer bench. Very nice.

I watched your squat videos and I can see what you mean about your right leg. That must present quite a number of challenges. If you are asking meat for squat advice, you’ve gone to the right place. His advice helped me significantly.

I laughed about your pullup dream. I’ve had similar dreams. Although I can do pullups, I’ve dreamt at times that I can blow off 20 reps without any effort. In the dream I’m kind of in awe of how cool I am

Thanks for stoppin’ by, ladies.

Belini - my ankle’s been problematic since I fell downstairs as a kid. I don’t have much recollection of that but I suspected I fell down the stairs because I turned my ankle over, rather than vice versa. Either way, it has a tendency to sprain. A year ago I turned it over coming down some steps at the railway station - this year I was running down a trail and landed on a tree root. I’ve done it enough times that I can rehab it well enough to run on it again within a few weeks. For me, the best thing is to get it bearing weight as soon as possible. I strap it up and put a brace on it but the day after I sprained it I walked 2 miles each way to work and back and iced it in the evenings. I also do ankle mobility stuff - I roll my feet on a tennis ball daily (I keep one at my desk at work, and one at home) and write the alphabet with my foot.

Problem this time is it’s disprupted a bone in my foot so although the ankle is 95%, I can’t run because of the stupid foot, which pisses me off. Nothing I can do but wait, because bones are tricky.

Ouro - cheers - I always liked benching although I messed up my right shoulder well and truly with excessive bencing in my early 20s (I was going for PBs pretty much every session, which is a dumbass thing to do). Now I’m a bit more sensible. I also changed my technique a lot - I found that Dave Tate how to bench video that’s on here really helpful in that respect. Stuff like how to unrack the weight whilst keeping shoulder blades retracted was pure gold.

The squat is a problem - I avoided it for years and years (although I went through a phase of squatting in a Smith Machine - yeah I know. Lame.) but I’m motivated to get it sorted now. I don’t think I’ve lost any fat but my thighs feel firmer nonetheless, so I’m quite pleased with that.

I did dancing for years and for some reason, the arches in my feet collapsed and without proper shoes/orthotics, I broke a small bone in top of my ankle and on the same day, partially tore my Achilles. I was out of action for a few months but tried to keep up the upper body work but it just wasnt the same and it still isnt. I did some plyometic jump squats last week and its been sore ever since. I didnt realize having flat feet could cause so many issues. My hips are constantly out of alignment, my knees tend to cave in while squatting, my lower back is weak and due to my Achilles injury, one calf is shorter than the other.

The Dave Tate video you mentioned sounds interesting, I wouldnt mind taking a look at it. My bench numbers majorly suck. I just cant seem to improve no matter how hard I try. The 5/3/1 program is on my to read list.

OK so gym this morning. Not brilliant - I was still very sore from Tuesday. I am sure it was the 1-arm incline push-ups - my ribs hurt, so that’s the only thing I can think did it. Anyway…

Warm up - plate pushes, 50 hypers (sorry Kimba - if it’s any consolation, they’re not getting easier), usual shit.

Squats

1 x 10 x bar
1 x 10 x 30kg (66lbs)
1 x 10 x 40kg (88lbs)
1 x 8 x 45kg (99lbs)
1 x 6 x 50kg (110lbs)
1 x 5 x 50kg (110lbs)

The 50kg sets weren’t so good - back didn’t feel too great. I’m thinking I may be best off going a bit lighter (40-45) and doing more reps and not sacrificing form. Or perhaps I just didn’t have a good day.

Hip thrusts (shoudlers on a bench)

3 x 8 x 60kg (132lbs)

Ouch. These suck.

And then some cable abductor thingies to finish. All I had time for.

Internet shopping is too damned easy - I managed to order two new pairs of Chucks and a dipping belt today. I should be saving money because I need a new boiler and water tank, but meh…

I’m over it. If I can do any hypers tomorrow without rounding my back, I’ll be a happy camper.

I’m in the market for a dipping belt myself, and would be interested in hearing what you got and eventually how you liked.

Internet shopping is too easy, especially with everyone doing free shipping these days. Living down under, the only thing that would put me off is the stupid shipping costs which would at times cost more than the item I was buying but now with free shipping, nothing is holding me back :frowning:

Nice work on the 50kilo bench press.

Got back from my parents. It was the usual routine - take all the rotten and out of date food out of their fridge (because my dad has no sense when he shops, buys too much and forgets about the stuff at the back). Go shopping to replace it. Cook for them. Cut their toenails (because they can’t, any more). Listen to my dad telling me for the umpteenth time how ill my mum is and where they keep their bank accounts if they die.

Truth is, my mother does look worse - she seems more despondant now. I guess that’s what happens when you lock an intelligent woman inside a failed body. She used to take a lot of pleasure in reading and gardening, neither of which she can do now (she can read a bit, but it’s tiring for her). She can’t speak well, due to aphasia, and her good friends all live far away. Most of their local friends are now dead or ill. Getting old is not for pussies.

I managed to get a workout of sorts - there are various exercise stations set up in the local park. I was going to speed walk around and see what I could do on the contraptions. Trouble was it started pissing with rain and, being on the coast, the rain was horizontal. I got a couple of chins and dips in (but the bars were cold and slippery) and despite my bad foot, I ended up running.

I got soaked and lost my favourite scarf (which I use to keep my floppy fringe out of my eyes). I was a bit miffed about that. But at least I did something.

Foot is no worse, really, and I was pleased to note I had no problems running, in terms of fitness. But I know it’s not smart to do it too much before it’s healed (if it ever does heal, of course).

I now have the joy of visiting the dentist to see what she can do for the tooth I have that crumbled. I suspect it’ll have to be crowned, unfortunately - I’ve already had one crown replaced this year and it’s far from cheap. Meh.

Cal, elder care PLUS crowns in one post???

Hands her a nice, stiff drink.
