First of all, you are looking very, very fine. That waist curve is seriously crazy.
Bench! Wow! A more than BW bench is just outstanding. I think you just grumble about your shoulder problems to throw us off.

My back has been voicing its displeasure since yesterday - sitting for any length of time is uncomfortable. Suffice to say I’ve been taking breaks from my computer gaming to go read a book or watch the telly (both of which I do on the bed, seeing as my flat is so small, the only chair is the computer chair). I have an ART session booked on Tuesday - hopefully that will help.
Managed to get a 6 mile run in this morning. Back was OK for that. I could feel it but it wasn’t distracting. My dodgy foot did start to complain bitterly on the last lap of the common but I gritted my teeth and carried on. Having exercised for something like 25 years now, I’ve learned to tell the difference between pain that says “oh god are you making me do this again?” and pain that says “back off motherfucker. NOW!” The foot is the former. The back, unfortunately, is the latter. Hopefully it’ll ease.
On the plus side, my shoulder feels surprisingly OK despite the heavy benching after a week of low calories.
Clocks went forward this morning. Not thrilled that Sunday is an hour shorter but the lighter evenings are welcome. And Easter is next weekend - 4 days off work. Bliss.
good to see you Cal. your dedication to the diet sure looks like it’s workin for ya! nice freakin bench…you badass.
re kimba and shoulder comment: the shoulders are a complex unit. Cal and i both suffer from shoulder pain caused by the stupidest tiny movements (she mentioned turning the newspaper page, me-putting my purse on my shoulder) it’s whatever rotational thing tied to the rotator cuff. someone actually knowledgeable could explain this… the pressing movements don’t always bring the pain to light…
at any rate- great job Cal!!
T, I was just yanking her chain. ![]()
Sadly, I know all about nagging, yet intermittent injuries.
Hauled my lazy arse out of bed early even though my body still thinks it’s an hour earlier than it is.
50 x hyperextensions
3 x 12 weighted hyperextensions (14kg dumbell behind neck - about 30lbs I think)
26kg x 10
28kg x 8
2 x 30kg x 5
Grip’s the main sticking point on the heavier sets, but it is improving.
Straight arm pulldowns: 8 x 25kg
Scap pulldowns: 10 x 45kg
(For the scap retractions - or should that be depressions? - I sit as if I’m going to do a lat pulldown, but instead of bending my arms and pulling the bar to my neck, I just pull my scaps, squeeze and release. This is for shoulder stability).
2 x 8 x 30kg
These were crappy today. Guess I pre-exhausted.
FIN.

what a drama queen…! sheeeesh
Yep. Watch the butt lift when benching. The federation I lift with says 50% of the buttocks has to be on the bench for it to count. You have a lovely arch in the bench. Always working on that, I am. Nice work with some heavy weight. Feeling a little melancholy watching bench videos . . .
Noted!
No workout today but I had my ART, and boy did I need it! Nicole, my therapist, is also a chiro, so she did a couple of adjustments to my back before she started the ART and my goodness it feels so much better. My glutes, piriformis, calves and shoulders were tight as as Vienna choirboy’s arse when the pope’s in town, so it was all pretty painful. But whilst the pain isn’t completely gone, the relief is noticeable.
Still, I’m going to give deadlifts and rack pulls a rest for a while until everything calms down. I would like to get back to 5/3/1 eventually but with the back, the tetchy shoulder and the diet, I don’t think now’s the time. I’m going to concentrate on doing a shit load of rowing movements and hope that’s enough to keep my back big and burly.

Just laughing at this…not the pain, the phraseology.
Those were some nice bench vids but that guy’s lift off sucked ass. Your gym need bigger employees.
You did a damn fine job with that bench.

Cal- you definitely have a little shakespearean blood in ya ![]()
Cheers Joe - it’s a local sports community centre, not a dedicated gym (though the gym is pretty decent for what it is - the other one in the area is all machines) and the instructors don’t tend to stay long before moving on. That guy is a nice enough fella though not a power lifter as you see. If I want a big guy to help me, I have to wait for the Poles to show up.

So I saw my mum. To hear my dad talk about her you’d think she was on her last legs. Certainly, she looks quite frail and not being able to speak much gets her down, but I think much of the malaise is boredom. The hospital is doing its best but there’s no real entertainment and she’s surrounded by women in a far worse state than she is. At least a couple of them appeared to have dementia. That has to be depressing.
Good news is (according to her) she should be out in a few days. I think my dad will be relieved - he doesn’t seem to handle being on his own at all well. He’d given some prawns to the cat saying they were out of date. I checked the packet and saw they were supposed to be eaten by end of Jan. If the cat doesn’t keel over then he’s probably going to be shitting and barfing all over the house. heavy sigh
Didn’t feel like doing much this morning but I did haul myself out for a three mile run. It was a nice enough day. I could feel the knee twinge a bit but it wasn’t major. I’ll just have to be careful with it and steer clear of lunches and any jerky movements. Foot was a bit grumbly but that’s to be expected. It seems not to like squats and lunges much either.
Right, going to get some breakfast and watch the show I recorded last night. [/quote]
Have you thought about getting your mom some books on tape? People find them really comforting, and the tone of voice and cadence has been found to be very soothing. There are actually some pretty interesting studies on it.
i’ll third kimba’s lol to the vienna boy’s tight ass- shit like that is why i love you.
i’ll second pch2’s suggestion for books on tape, and snaps caution about benchbutt.
I’m glad to see you still in the gym with everything else goin on in your life, finding that balance can be rough.
also, never thought i’d hear someone eagerly anticipating a Pole… nyuk nyuk. (my parents are old enough that i can make those jokes.)
Yes I’d thought of the books on tape or CD - iPod would be no good to her but if I could find a good condition Walkman or Discman it’d be cool.
As for Poles, the idea of sliding down a nice oiled Pole isn’t entirely unpleasant.
Good Friday today - good because I don’t have to work. Hurrah.
I did go to the gym though.
50 x hyperextensions - got to keep my lumber limber.
1 x 10 x bar
1 x 10 x 25kg
1 x 7 x 30kg (rep PR)
1 x 3 x 35kg
1 x 1 x 37.5kg (PR). That’s 72.5lbs I think
1 x 0 x 40kg. Well, previous weight went up OK, so had to try. I got it half way but my right shoulder gave out. I reckon I can get this before too long, though, despite the diet.
Not unpleased with all this.
1 x 10 x 26kg
1 x 8 x 28kg
1 x 6 x 30kg (rep PR, by 1).
Body rows (on locked Smith Machine)
Push ups
3 x 10
Straight arm pulldowns, 25kg: 8, 8
Reverse pulldowns (basically like doing a chin, only on a pulldown machine): 45kg x 6, 40kg x 6
After the second set my lats were fried, I was hungry and decided that was enough for me.
Weigh in: 147lbs!!! That’s 2lbs down since Saturday, despite eating more than a few chocolates last night (what? It’s Easter! Almost).
That means I’ve lost 15lbs, or just over a stone, since New Year. For a Brit, losing a stone is a big thing. I’m chuffed. I do expect to put one of those pounds back on over the weekend, mind…there are some hot cross buns and an Easter Egg with my name on 'em.
Right, it’s 12.30, I haven’t eaten yet today and I need to make me some brunch. Laters ladies.
yeah for the weight loss Cal!- goes to show the worth of sticking with a program.
hooray for throwing a stone, Cal!
15…that’s big. i’m happy for you and now i’m chasing you (sitting at 149 myself) enjoy those easter eggs.
and yah, nice training too. *eggcellent rows and MP! ![]()
btw, are you still eating tuna and protein shakes?

lol
congrats on the PR and the fatloss, woman! you’ve earned both, thats for sure!
Cheers!
Tal - during the week, yes. I eat normally at weekends. Of course this is Easter weekend so I am eating a lot more than normal, heh.
Today: squelchy, muddy 4.5 mile run. I had enough energy to do more but my foot and butt were starting to grumble (and blister…my foot that is) so, given that I have my second 10K next Sunday, I thought I’d exercise discretion.
Bought some new Nike Frees yesterday - the 3.0 (my other ones are 5.0s). I’ll be keeping the 5.0s for the 10ks though, since they’re already muddied up. The 3.0s are white…not the best choice for off-road. But I can wear them to work and do sprints in the park on the odd lunchtime.
Congrats on the weight loss! And I still envy your rows.
Sprints during lunch time - you are a far better woman than I.
Enjoy the hot cross buns, the oiled up poles, and all the other good stuff!!
