Yay for squats! I like it doggy style, lol, better description.
Yeah I’m the same with eating, I have been going back and forth about to diet or not to diet, think I need to sort out the head first too. I’ve been very good about being a bit more free with how I restrict myself and how I think about my body, that’s helped ALOT so far. But I think I need to take it a few more steps further before I feel that I can go on an actual diet without reverting back to my old relationship with food. Guess I should start posting about it on my log too, just to get it out there.
Awesome on the squats! I’ve been trying to find some ways to self-mobilize that posterior hip to help with the knee to chest thing and this is the best I found. Hopefully the link will work–
Thanks for that - I do a lot of those anyway but it’s not something I’m going to be able to fix overnight, sadly.
Some interesting news - I’m going up to Manchester tomorrow to stay with my friend Colin. We’re doing Alton Towers on the Saturday but have Friday afternoon to kill so he suggested going to the gym. He goes to a proper lifters gym so it’ll be a nice opportunity to do some training away from my usual place. It’s not a definite but it’s certainly a nice idea and I’ll report back next week.
Looking forward to the weekend!
The extra bones sounds cool! I have always been fascinated by genetic mutations, being the product of inbreeding myself (the Armenian side of my family a few generations ago).
Those step overs look awesome btw. Very good for a soccer player - I’ll have to remember those.
Good luck on the diet change - You know your body the best, so at least you know what you need to do to get it where you want it to be. I’m an all or nothing girl as well, so you’re foray into moderation will be a good model for me too. Altho, I’m pretty sure my foibles are associated to “other” things that I do on my spare time…
And yay for a good squatting day! Nice to see your persistence paying off.
Double win on the coasters and proper gym! I hope you get some good advice from your friend. Hope you’re having a wonderful weekend!!
Can’t wait to hear about your fantastic weekend. My mom says coasters and such (by such I mean buses in third world countries) are just as good as a massage. Maybe it’l be just the shake up you need?

congrats on your squat progress!! i’m thinking i’ve got some hip capsule thing to be working on, too. i don’t think my hips would like pulling sumo and i have trouble with pulling with a frog stance (legs a bit externally rotated) especially once i’m close to lockout. hmm… just realized this today. and i thought my hips were all better
can’t wait to hear how you find the gym. i love visiting new gyms…
I’m back.
We ended up not going to the gym - my friend Colin had already been when I arrived and he wanted to see the new Harry Potter so we did that instead.
However, the next two days were very active (just as well as I ate a few too many of Colin’s homemade cupcakes!). Saturday was at Alton Towers, UK’s best known theme park. It used to be a stately home and the grounds are spread over a valley. We did a fair bit of walking from ride to ride as the cablecar is down for maintenance, but we were also there for a heritage tour (basically a guided tour of the grounds and castle, going over the history of the place) which involved a lot of steps up and down. Calves were sore the next day!
Then Sunday a few of us went to a small ecopark in Wales where all the rides are people-powered. There’s a small, interesting rollercoaster there which involves walking to the top of a steep hill and boarding a funicular railway down. The weight of this carries the coaster train to the top of the hill. You then walk up the hill again, board the train and ride it down to the bottom. It’s not the most thrilling ride but it is innovative and fun.
They also had a big jungle gym, a boat ride where you pull yourselves along using ropes, and a huge astroturf slide which also involved a lot of stairs. So that day was pretty much a workout too!
Cheers. It was a lot of fun. Here’s a piccy of me and my good friend, Colin. I’m still sorting through all my photos of the weekend and trying to get them up onto Photobucket but my upload speed is diabolical. Thank goodness my provider is rolling out fibreoptic at the end of the year!
I’m going to be signing off from this log. I’ve only a new page left and I want to start my August regime with a new log.
Just to finish off, I’m looking at the goals I set myself in January.
Drop some weight. I am aiming for 140lbs although that’s a weight I haven’t seen in several years…
Nowhere close. The beginning of the year was quite stressful (school inspection, professional assessments etc) and I just never got started on the diet. I am currently 158lbs - quite a long way from my original goal. However, the lowest I’ve been in recent years was 144lbs four years ago. I am making August the month I concentrate on recomping, but I won’t focus quite so much on weight, more on how I look and feel.
10 Chins. Or maybe 11 in '11? Most I’ve done is 5 and that tends to go down when I put weight on. I need to get better at these.
This just didn’t happen. Shoulder issues have prevented me from training chins at all. I also need to drop a lot of weight before I can do anything close to five chins - right now I don’t think I can do one.
Improve my gymnastics. Specifically, I want to be able to do a handstand and a backward roll properly.
I got the backward roll. Still working on the handstand - I can kick into one but not hold it. So there’s progress, but it’s not as fast as all that. I’ll keep working on it.
Do the splits (not box splits, mind - just the leg forward/leg behind version). Never managed to get all the way down, so I would like to do that.
Again, I’ve not managed to get the splits yet but I’ll keep at it.
Run a half-marathon.
Tick. Did this in May. Unfortunately, the foot problem has stopped me from running for the past month or so, but I did make a lot of progress in the first half of the year and am proud of my achievement. Just hope I can get the foot thing sorted so I can start running again. (And that’s because I enjoy running).
So, here’s to progress this month.
Also, if anyone can give me advice on de-stinking Vibrams, please let me know! I can’t machine wash them because I don’t have a machine. I get service washes done at the laundrette but I don’t trust the women there with my shoes. I have already hand washed them once but they already stink again. Ugh.
How long did it take for them to stink again? I machine wash mine once a week and they surely need it by the time it is washing day again. How long do they take to dry when you hand wash them? I’d rather hand wash them if the drying time isn’t too bad because I think the machine is fairly hard on them.
Baking soda? Some people swear by powdering their footwear, but I’ll admit I’ve never noticed a difference for having done that.
You can get toe socks for them and apparently they help a lot. Maybe not so appealing for summer, though.
Just been to the doctor’s. Predictably she wants me to go for an x-ray first. I mentioned MRI and she said (being National Health Service) there are steps they have to take first. X-Ray first, then if nothing is conclusive I’ll have to see a specialist and then s/he will decide whether to send me for an MRI or scan. Meh. So many hoops. Stupid foot.
For those interested, here’s a video my friend Col made of the “people powered” eco-coaster in Wales. It’s quite interesting to see how it works (and I’m in it).
