Cal's Big Log 3D - Attack of the Giant Arse

feeling your tiredness…

This is my second day off from the gym and I am not feelin guilty whatsoever. I don’t take ‘deloads,’ so a couple days here and there in the grand scheme isn’t going to hurt.

Hi Cal!

I stole some beer from Maschy’s place…wanna sit a spell and get pissed?

or mebbe a little merry?

That’s a nice offer, Edgy, but I don’t like beer and am not much of a drinker, to be honest. I might have a crafty sherry tomorrow when I’m visiting my parents, though.

really?

I kinda figured you for a beer drinker, being from the land-where-great-beer-is-made.

Oh well, never fear, I shall take my ill-gotten gain to Frenchies place, she may wanna partake~

C-Ya!

I’ve tried to like it, but I just don’t. The only place I drank it to any degree was on my Korea and Japan trip in 2009 due to the lack of alternatives. I remember having a beer at a theme park at 10am because the other concessions stands were still closed and it was that or fizzy pop (aka soda). Beer seemed like the lesser evil.

School today was tiring. My year 6 girls were particularly unruly so I made them do three sets of squats followed by sprints. That shut them up. I will employ this tactic more often.

Off to my parents tomorrow for mum’s birthday (she’s 81). I’m going to cook for them. Hopefully there will be no poop to clean up this time. Parents getting old = major suckage. Take some advice and enjoy them and reminisce with them while they still have their mental faculties and are able to talk.

how do the kids go with squatting? still a natural movement for them or have some of them started to seize up already?

Cal: I hope the visit with your parents goes as well as it can. I’m sure it must be difficult.

You’re kicking ass balancing training, dieting, and working.

hope your weekend turned out well.

Back from the parents. No poop incidents this time and they appreciated the meals I cooked for them. Always stressful though - glad to be home! Must admit I ate a load of crap there because of the boredom. I get horrible cabin fever there - mum can only sit in a chair so I can only sit in a chair. A flea-ridden sofa, as it happens - their cat was put to sleep a week ago (he was old) but apparently his fleas live on. Ack!

Alexus - some kids squat really well but some have worse mobility than I do. They’re still young but it’s very apparent that quite a few of them have physical issues associated with inactivity. Of course, there are also those who can do box splits and fold themselves in half in a manner that I find enviable.

I’m glad you survived the weekend with the parents. So totally understanding the aging parents issue, as I’m right there with you.

Busy day today so I’ll be brief.

Warm-up:

20 hypers
20 reverse hypers with V at top
20 clams (per leg)
20 single leg hip thrusters (foot on high bench) (per leg)
20 good mornings, 5kg body bar
20 overhead bulgarian split squats, 5kg body bar (per leg)

In the free weight room:

10 stepovers pin 8
10 stepovers pin 10

Squats:

Bar x 20
30kg x 20 (+5)
40kg x 15 (+3)
45kg x 12 (+2)
50kg x 10
55kg x 6 (+1)
57.5kg x 4 (+1)
60kg x 2 (+1) - Went for a third but pulled it slightly high so didn’t count it

So far so good, but then I loaded 62.5kg on the bar. First time ever. Walked it out, started squatting and then bottled it. I was a bit cross with myself because I know this is mental. So I tried again. Slapped myself in the face, growled a bit, started the rep and then bottled it again. Grr. I know I have this in me but I think I need to be more comfortable at 60kg (which is challenging enough, mentally) before attempting to go heavier. Small steps.

Still, it was disappointing enough that all the other extra reps didn’t seem to matter. So I did penance in the form of…

Bulgarian Split Squats

2 x 10 x 20kg

10kg dumbell in each hand. These were HARD.

Pullthroughs

20kg x 12
22.5kg x 10
25kg x 8

I don’t really like this exercise - it feels awkward. I prefer KB swings for generating hip thrust, really.

Leg Curls

30kg x 10 (per leg)

I seem to be regressing on these. Got fed up and went off to do some gymnastics. Did a few handstands, headstands and some ugly forward rolls (ugh I am out of pracitse doing these!) then 45 minutes of spin.
Legs feel fried.

aw, i so wish i could train squats with you! you got 60 for a double! and almost a triple! and you did a BUNCH of squats before that… i bet you could do 62.5kg if you shortened your warm-ups a little… takes balls to put more weight on after doing a rep that you don’t feel so happy about, too.

interesting to hear that even young kids these days show signs of decrepitude… guess use it or lose it starts much earlier than i’d thought…

i don’t envy you for those bulgarians. not at all. good on ya.

Yeah cal. Nice work on those squats. And those Bulgarians. I hate those mother fuckers.

The squat will come! Hmm bulgarians, I remember the first time I was introduced to them, I loved them, now I hate them but guess I’d better get back to 'em.

Parents, yeah I sometimes don’t like to think too much about their aging myself. Do you have any other sibs?

Nope, I’m an only child. Very small family - mum is also an only child and dad’s only surviving sister (and her adult children) are up in Yorkshire. To compound matters, all my parent’s local friends have either died or become ill themselves so they literally have no one save the carers and the cleaner who come to see them.

I must admit it’s given me a rather grim view of old age. My current retirement plan is going to be flying to Vegas, blowing whatever money I have in the casinos and then driving off the Grand Canyon in a rented sportscar. That’s the best plan I’ve come up with so far.

On a lighter note, I had a good time yesterday. I have a US friend who builds roller coasters and he was in London for a trade show, so we went out for food and then had a few drinks back at the hotel. Food consumed: A lot of sushi, seaweed salad, a chocolate tart (in an upmarket coffee place). Drinks consumed: one glass of white wine, one mixed berry daquiri, one pina colada, two strong black coffees and some green tea. Heh.

Oooh and I’ve just had fibreoptic broadband installed. I had broadband before and was supposed to get around 5Mb/s download but was struggling to get 1MB/s on most days. I had to wait around 20-30 seconds for TNation to load. Srsly. Anyway, fibreoptic has just hit my local area so I had it put in today and now I’m getting 37Mb/s download and around 8Mb/s upload. Fuck yeah! Web pages open instantly. It’s awesome.

Gym today:

Warm up:

20 lateral raises
20 front raises
20 dumbell presses
20 curls
20 hammer curls
20 L raises
20 bent over raises
10 YWTLs

Military Press:

Bar x 10
25kg x 10
30kg x 8
32.5kg x 6
35kg x 4
37.5kg x 2
40kg x FAIL (twice)

Not happy about the failure on 40kg but I just couldn’t get the bugger up. Tried twice. Failed twice. No real explanation other than I had only had 6 hours sleep due to seeing my friend. It certainly wasn’t lack of nutrition.

Band Assisted Pull-ups:

7 (+1), 5, 5, 4

Weighted Dips (Chain belt +10kg plate):

4 x 5

Chins:

3 x 2

No assistance - quite pleased I could get two reps with these as I’ve not done 'em in ages. Chins being the underhand grip variety.

Superset:

Overhead tricep extension (two hands on one dumbell): 16kg x 12, 18kg x 10, 20kg x 8
DB Curls: 6kg x 12, 8kg x 10, 10kg x 8

Superset:

Rope Pushdown: 10kg x 10, 12.5kg x 8, 15kg x 6
Push-ups: 10, 8, 6

Pre-exhaust is a bitch!

pina coladas are my kriptonite  very cheesy, I know. Glad you had a good time Cal.

I like too

I was out at the trade show too, yesterday afternoon. My friend took me to the reception after and I was inhaling canapes like PacMan. (My day’s food prior to that had been one shake and one can of tuna). Good though because I just put down a deposit for my next holiday and I have hardly any money for this month. Definitely going to be a shake and tuna month for sure.

Hey Cal!

Glad to see that all is well with you!

Sorry to hear about the parents - aging parents is a sobering situation, that’s for sure. Call me when you head over to Vegas - death by buffet…hm?

Is it weird that i’m most surprised that you had coffee? HAH! Sounds like you had fun. I love fruity drinks, being the tart that I am.

Training looks good! Good job on the squat PR and the BS squats!

No worries on the MP. You’ll get it. I find MP to be ridiculously hard, so kudos to you. And woohoo on the chins! Great work!

Keep at it!

I got the 40kg last week, that’s why I was frustrated. But it is my max and everyone has days when they miss their max. It’s cool.

I am so tired today. Less than 6 hours sleep two nights running. I am not doing spin class after school! (Plus, I want to play with my superfast internet connection!)
