So I looked up the Harry-Benedict formula to determine how much I need to eat for maintenance, then eat ~500 calories fewer for weight loss.
stats: 225 lbs @ 6’3" at 22 years old
66.5 + (13.75 X weight in kg) + (5.003 X height in cm) - (6.775 X age in years)
mine is ~2200 calories per day according to this.
how can this be? I’ve been eating 3500 calories per day as I bulked.
bottom line: is my calculation right?

Do a search on “massive eating” and use Berardi’s formula instead.
I’ve always felt those calculators are just a starting point or guideline. They aren’t perfect.
Try eating that number of calories for 2 weeks and then check your progress. Did you gain weight or lose weight and then adjust accordingly depending on your goals.

Here’s the Berardi calculator from his site.

As Vader said, they’re a starting point.
However, the formula might have been pretty close for you.
2200 to maintain, and you were adding weight with 3500, seems logical to me.
