California Residency

I need to establish residency in California. The application opens in June I have some questions

The programme director has not been helpful at all and several of the upper years have horror stories dealing with bureaucracy. I figured that some of you guys might have insight

  1. I got my cali real ID in December (I don’t drive). Will it be an issue if I go out of country for a month in August?
  2. If the answer to 1) is no, are there ways around this
  3. Any things I can do to speed up the process

If this is for an academic program, it is quite difficult to do this if the intent is tuition considerations. From @doogie 's link (which is published by the UC system):

To meet these requirements, you must be continuously physically present in California for more than one year (366 days) immediately prior to the residence determination date (generally the first day of classes) and intend to make California your home permanently.

Are you looking to start an academic program in Fall 2024? What part of CA are you looking at?

I’m a first year phd student at UCLA right now

is what programme director said
but there’s also

Absences exceeding 6 weeks during the one-year qualification period is disqualifying.

which implies that a 4 week trip wouldn’t be an issue

It sounds like you have time to get a passport, no?

Would this not alleviate any travel issues you have?
