I love to ski, and ski a lot. I used to compete in High School in freestyle (moguls) In college I used to coadh the freestyle team. After 9 years of only skiing about 35 days a year (used to ski about 90 days), I moved up to Vt with my fiance.
Two years ago I skied about 65 days. Last year I started coaching again and skied 119 days (my most). I also used to play lacrosse and swim in high school. I was an ocean lifeguard for 10 years from the age of 16 on Long Island, where I grew up.
I tore cartilage in my knee on July 9th and planned surgery for Sept 10th. Dr. planed to trim the torn piece off and my recovery was set to be 2 days on crutches and full recovery under 1 month.
Upon getting inside the knee the tear was very large and had to be repaired. This ment 6-8 weeks on crutch’s and 3-6 months to full recovery. Cause of the repair weight bearing and impacts have to be limited.
From July 9th till Nov 15th I was very limited on anything I could do. Was not able to walk. Mentally I was upset and down. Anyway I ended up putting on about 40lbs. I went from 190 to 228.
My winter job is ski instruction and I want to start around xmas. I see my Dr. on Monday and will have a better idea of when I can ski.
I started training and diet about ten days ago. Dr. and Physical Therapist have ok’d most exercise, just not squats, deadlifts and running. This morning I am 220. My short term goal is to get to 205 by xmas. Loosing this weight is very important, for my knee as I feel that loosing 40+ lbs will put less stress on my repaired cartilage. Along with all the other benefits.
