What does it mean to be “near all drag”?
Opposite of “High Speed-Low Drag”. I am pretty much “all drag” and no speed. Basically saying that in the big picture, I suck horribly with regards to using firearms.
As for the rest, I think that is a great attitude. However, not being able to shoulder the gun makes the whole aiming and managing recoil thing a serious problem. I don’t mean in an “embrace the challenge way” but more in the “play piano with my feet, or try to get seriously big and muscular with only bodyweight exercises” kind of way.
I think shotguns are great, but perhaps getting a pump gun with a stock and aiming for the following would suit your purposes:
Picked Jessie Abbate because she is well known
Or managing full 12 gauge recoil like this:
Rob Haught explaining the “push-pull”
For what its worth, and to further explain the “I suck” thing, with a pistol grip only shotgun I either am forced to shoot from the hip and miss, or look pitifully close to this:
I meant no offense with my first post. I just hate to see people spend good money only to buy frustration. Because skill at arms can also allow good people to defend themselves, and those they love, from the malice of those not so good I am even more inclined to want people to be as “set up for success” as possible.

She actually does not do well with cold, though she says she would for hunting, due to the excitement. Could warmer weather months work out well?
a lot of women prefer a Ladies Night at a range like this http://www.atpguns.com/ so they can learn to shoot away from the “YOU’RENOTHOLDINGTHEMOTHERFUCKINGGUNLIKEITOLDYOUDON’T YOUKNOWHOWTOLISTENWHYAMIEVENTRYINGTODOTHISSHIT!!!” type of teaching.
when she has some confidence try to find a place like this and take her to " Full-Auto Friday Rent one full-auto machine gun and get a second rental for FREE!!! "
she can try out a H&K MP5 or FN P90 because shooting is serious but it needs to be fun also.

this is a great video you and the wife really should watch together. actually every woman considering a gun should watch this as she knows her stuff.

Haha, a 12 gauge sawed-off with buckshot would work great for personal defense. But we are getting down the rabbit trail a bit, considering what the OP asked for.
In that spirit…shotguns are great, but this is what I keep handy.
For the OP or anyone else,
Kathy Jackson’s Cornered Cat is a fantastic resource for any shooter. It is however, geared towards women.
A new shooter could do a hell of a lot worse than taking the time to read through it.

You may not be hands on expert but your knowledge and passion for the machine comes right through.
Robert A, thank you so much for the videos!
Nothing like a role model of another female who is capable and better then me for inspiration - and a little bit of healthy competition, ![]()
The expression in the second video: “aggressive athletic stance”:
That is my middle name!
And I could see it coming on the third video the gun hitting his face, so I feel a bit confident I won’t at least break my nose but I see your point.
It will surely be a challenge. Should I get the gun I will post here.
Thank you for the education!
And absolutely no offense perceived at all: I was just being transparent about my nature as to why I would be so “foolish” to get a pistol grip shotgun with zero experience.

I am glad to help. I try to earn my keep.
As for female competition; here is a 17 year old, small framed girl, who shoots far better than I can. Sorry it’s “only” a pistol video
Regards,
Robert A
well if you want to teach her to shoot, and money is a concern, get a gun that fires .22 rounds just cause they are cheap and she can fire alot of rounds, also the recoil is low so she won’t learn to be “scared” of the recoil. Later you can upgrade.
If the goal is home defense, then you can’t go wrong with a sig .357
The walther p99 as mentioned above is a good pistol also.

I have a question for Sen: is her gun intended for “fun” or CCW or home defense or all three?
Is CCW Concealed, Carry Weapon? I’m not sure we’re allowed to do that in Maryland…anyway…it’s something we’ve been talking about for a while as something we’d like to have as defense should we need one for the home primarily now that I think about it…

Yep, we’ll go after coyotes and/or go shooting from the boat.
Excellent! Very much looking forward!!!

I need some help in getting She Say a gun for Christmas. Not sure what facts you lot would need to help me, but:
I was also thinking I’d get her this gift certificate for the intro. pack here: http://www.gilbertindoorrange.com/Beginner.html
So…any suggestions?
Suggestions?
Buy your wife something she is interested in (see pic above).
Maybe save the gun for next year and just buy her some gun safety or hunters education courses to do together this year.
To me, this sounds like something you want your wife to have (or maybe just something you personally want). My wife likes a lot of stuff I think is junk. But that’s what I get her for presents because that’s what she wants. eh, just my 2 cents

here’s hoping you don’t divorce. ![]()
What will happen if you go into the shop and go “aww look! This gun suits you perfectly!” pointing out the small itsy bitsy pistol and then she goes for the Magnum or .45?
.357 Magnum allows not only that and .38 Special, but also 38 Short Colt or 38 Long Colt.
38 Long Colt makes a nice training round for a novice shooter as it is quite soft, at least if the revolver is not very light.
In other words, with a nice 357 Magnum you can’t go wrong with regard to what power level she may prefer.
Agreed.
With that cartridge in mind I have a question for Sen: is her gun intended for “fun” or CCW or home defense or all three? If it’s CCW or home defense I’d steer you to a Ruger SP 101. Then I’d go for the hammerless version.
If self defense is paramount in your gun purchasing decision, and for a woman it certainly should be as no one is more deserving of carrying than a woman, then get her a gun that is simple to use (revolver), compact (so she is not inconvenienced by carrying it and actually wants to have it with her at all times), and hammerless (so it doesn’t snag if she carries it in her purse or coat pocket or whatever).
Why is there a need to buy a gun? Is everyone mutually armed? And why defend your home with lethal force? Just curious.
I dunno where I am from we get an alarm system for home defense and a big dog.
My dog (a beautiful and watchful German Short-haired Pointer) once tripped my alarm system. Took the local sheriff 45 mins-1 hour to arrive. If someone strongly intended to, I could have been robbed blind or killed by a motivated attacker if I had not been armed. An alarm system or dog are layers of security and not very reliable ones at that. That’s where a well trained individual with a firearm comes in.

In Wisconsin we don’t have alarms and we leave our doors unlocked. Most everyone that I know has a collection of firearms and knows how to use them. The crime rate where I am is seriously almost non-existent.
sen say, I hope that your wife likes whatever you decide to get her. Shooting really is so much fun and when you get to be decent, it’s very empowering. As far as choosing a weapon, it’s such an individual preference and your wife may like something different than I would choose. I’d really have her try a few out at a range before committing. Having said that, I’m not as experienced as some in this thread so their input is most likely more valuable than my own. Also, I wouldn’t be inclined to think that she’d consider shooting at a range a one time thing. I’d be willing to bet that she is enthralled by the experience and can’t wait to go again.
