Nice to be able to do dips again. Swings and roundabouts though, shoulder is recovering so now my back is playing up again. All reps were done under control, just doing whatever I could that wasn’t putting pressure on my back.

Watched Jay Vincent and Drew Baye do a similar workout so decided to do it myself. It was good and my arms and forearms know about it this morning. Went to failure then took 10 breaths and did as many more as I could, which wasn’t many. And just to prove I truly am in league with the devil, I’m currently reading and enjoying Mike Mentzer: American Odysseus.

I am reading that as well. Quite interesting.

Haven’t read that one yet. Does he dwell on the 1980 Olympia a lot?

It does go into it quite a bit and the background to it as well and there is a lot that relates to Arnold and the Weider brothers as a result of that.

The Weiders could be naughty boys. The Black Prince by Robby Robinson delves into the Weider empire. The 1981 Olympia might have been more controversial. It appears “the fix was in” on more than one Olympia. I read (somewhere) that in Pumping Iron the film crew was instructed to avoid filming certain competitors too much due to viewers thinking they looked better than the Austrian. Robby Robinson was one of them. Weider’s famous “Trainer of Champions” bust statue was Joe Weider’s melon placed on the top of Robby Robinson’s bust.

I imagine a whole book could be written about the inside workings of the Weider machine.

Sorry for the hijack.

I’ve read The Black Prince as well and thought he was badly treated.

If you’ve not read it volume 2 of Muscle Smoke and Mirrors is quite eye opening on what went on. It went a bit too deep on Arthur Jones and various lawsuits for my taste though, still a good read.

No need to apologise I see it all as conversation rather than a hijack.

One of Arthur jones’ sons wrote a biography of his dad. Nautilus: The Lost Empire of Arthur Jones. The kid’s name is William. I quit reading it and deleted it from my Kindle. I do not know anything concerning Gary Jones (Hammer Strength), but brother William was/is a racist son of a gun. If I recall Arthur had a tendency to live by a shoe string.

I have volume I of Muscle, Smoke and Mirrors. I need to start reading that.

I’ll take that as a warning and avoid that book, thanks.
