British Movies - Suggestions?

Hi!

I started discovering British filmmaking and i like it so far. My favorites are:
Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels
Snatch
Football Factory
Green Street Hooligans (not sure if it is completely British though)
London to Brighton

What would you advise to look further? Any suggestions?

Big fan of snatch. Trainspotting is an excellent movie. Layer Cake is pretty good.

‘Outlaw’ with Sean Bean is pretty good, very depressing, but good.

If you want something a bit older, but very British, loads of Michael Caine’s older films are great, especially the Italian Job. Also, his Harry Palmer spy movies are very good. These are not really in the same vein as your current list though. I love them however.

Peter Greenaway’s flics.

Esp. The Belly of an Architect, Drowning by Numbers, The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover, Prospero’s Books , The Baby of Mâcon.

This Is England

Yeah, i’ve seen these:
This Is England (Nice one! Very real in terms of how actors play, the scenes etc)
Outlaw (Depressing indeed, but still great!)
Trainspotting - this one is classics!

Thanks for other suggestions - will go find them.

Shallow Grave
Scum
Made in Britain
Sexy Beast
Gangster No. 1
Dead Man’s Shoes
28 Days Later

That was the best horror/zombie movie to come out in a long time. Definitely gonna be a classic.

Sexy Beast and Gangster Number 1 were good. 28 days later was too much of a ripoff of the George Romero original ‘Day of The Dead’. Zombie movies are always fun though.

rise of the footsoldier

Trainspotting is my all time favourite film (hence the avatar).

For another awesome low budget horror check out Dog Soldiers.

The Full Monty - Another great Robert Carlisle film is achingly funny.

Shaun of the Dead, followed immediately by Hot Fuzz.

-dizzle

Zulu - Classic, very un-PC.

Run fat boy, run

Kes.

Sequel was even better.

Seems like you’re focusing on just a certain brand of British films. What about comedy? Monty Python? Holy Grail and Life of Brian are both hilarious. Or cult classics like Withnail & I?

Agreed. I’d forgotten all about Withnail & I - I have a copy here somewhere and will watch it tonight. That is one seriously good film.

I’ll add my vote for Shaun of the Dead and Dog Soldiers.

The Wicker Man is another cult-classic.
(NOT the 2006 remake; the 1973 original – the 101min version (as opposed to the shorter 87min theatrical release), if you can find it).

True. The sequel wasn’t half-bad either.

Shaun of the Dead was awesome as well.
