love finding cheap quality use lifting stuff. Good find

Strongman competition is in the books! Was very nervous as I hadn’t competed in over a year but I only zeroed one event and walked away still in 1 piece. Bottom line is I just need to keep grinding away and getting stronger. I’m decent at the moving/athletic events but I’m just too skinny and weak at the static stuff.

Event 1: 200lb keg carry, drop in sled then drag the sled back - this wasn’t that bad, the carry was far more challenging than the drag but neither were a limit effort

Event 2: Rolling Thunder Hold - didn’t get video of this but I only managed a few seconds. Didn’t really do any training for this and I’m kicking myself for that but oh well.

Event 3: Sandbag to Shoulder ladder- bags were 150/175/200, very happy to get the 200 as you can see it was a floppy mess and it was causing a lot of people problems

Event 4: Car Squat - totally brutal and took me a good chunk of time to get my bearings, the judge came up to me after and told me my rack height was wrong and I had a bigger ROM than everyone else, oh well

Event 5: 175lb Incline Log Press - this was my zero, just didn’t practice for this in any way and it showed. My right pec was cramping up hard after but it’s all good now.

Now to trek 5 miles through the woods tomorrow!

Great job, my man! Awesome effort all around, but that Car Squat was something else—you were working hard!

And that’s a wrap. 5 miles in a 50lb vest through the woods and rolling hills, total time was just under 100 minutes. I thought my vest would blend in with all the people wearing hydration packs, but I definitely caught a lot of attention lol.

I certainly made some mistakes in this whole training process, but it also lit a fire under my ass and I think it’s safe to say I’m in the best shape of my life. I saw a lot of people hacking up lungs yesterday and I didn’t see anyone today that looked like they could squat a car. If I was picking teams for the apocalypse, I’d definitely pick me.

Awesome job on getting out there and competing mate. Glad you are in 1 piece and hopefully you enjoyed the day and got to meet some cool people.

That’s awesome, congratulations on getting another comp done and learning more about yourself. Being able to say you’re in the best shape of your life is a massive achievement (and we’ve seen you looking and performing pretty blooming sharp previously!)

Holy Schiesse. That is one way to win a spot on Team No Zombies!

I love this.

Outstanding showing on the strongman comp. I particularly dug the grit on the sandbag shouldering. For that car squat, investing in a belt would go a long way. Definitely an interesting set up.

My mind was ready to get back at it but my body was definitely still hurting on this one. Legs and upper back are still trashed from that ruck. Glad this was just the week of 3s on the big lifts.

Looking forward, probably not going to signup for those 2 strongman competitions early next year after all. They are each 2-3 hours away, so it’s just not realistic. Rather save my travel budget for something actually enjoyable. I’m keeping my eyes open for something more local, and not just strongman either. I like my routine of just signing up for all kinds of stuff. I think it helps me build GPP.

Awesome job at the competition man! Looked like some fun events. That car squat set up looks painful lol

Awesome 50lb hike as well! I need to get my rucking gear dusted off and use it more, always felt strong after doing the rucks for a couple of weeks!

Where do you typically find these local events? I find it hard to find anything strongman related besides some national level websites.
I will have to check out FB groups or something?

Head to the website ā€œIron Podiumā€ to look for strongman events all over the United States.

Yeah Iron Podium has what you are looking for. Eventbrite will also have some more informal/small stuff. There was a ā€œBBQ and Bench Pressā€ competition local to me that I almost signed up for off there, haha.

ā€œBBQ and Bench Pressā€

This is 100% superior to ā€œDonuts and Deadliftsā€ and is honestly like a story RIGHT out of Paul Kelso’s ā€œPowerlifting Basics Texas Styleā€ where he talks about the New Year’s Even party at the Scoot ā€˜n Boot.

Neither of these can touch this:

Stuff like this DOES make me miss powerlifting in all honesty. It’s rough bringing my kid to strongman competitions. VERY different crowd…

I need a Canadian version :frowning:

Definitely looks like slimmer pickings but I did find these 2 sites to keep an eye on.

Thanks man, I’ve been checking those as well!

Excited to see what you do next!

@T3hPwnisher @Stormblessed I’m looking to setup a cycle of Specificity Alpha after this run of Grey Man. I dig how it’s basically a conjugate split; 2 days of heavy, low-rep work with an emphasis on bar speed, and 2 days of lighter, high-rep work where he encourages you to flirt with failure. Seems like a good way to cover a lot of bases and not get too burnt out on 1 style. With no competitions on the immediate horizon, I’m just looking to keep building the foundation, but especially my upper body pressing strength and arms. Let me know if you see any obvious shortfalls in my plan.

Max Strength Days

  • Cambered Bar Squat (no specific reason for that bar other than I bought it and want to use it, but it should be nicer on my shoulders directly before bench)
  • Axle Bench Press
  • 4" Block Deads with the straight bar (should be easier than squatting and pulling from the floor in the same session)

Hypertrophy Day 1

  • V-Handle Landmine Rows
  • DB Inclines
  • Cambered Bar Good Mornings
  • Drag Curls
  • OH Extensions with the axle

Hypertrophy Day 2

  • Chest Supported Rows with the open trap bar
  • DB Press
  • Landmine Belt Squats
  • Axle Curls
  • Dips, likely either with chains or against bands to really emphasize the triceps at the tops

I should be able to giant/super set the first 3 and the last 2 movements on the H days with my setup, but I don’t see it making or breaking the program either way. I tried to go for joint-friendly movements on those days where I know I can get a good mind/muscle connection.

I don’t know if this is a concern for you, but my brain keeps seeing ā€œCambered bar squats twice a week and cambered bar good mornings once a weekā€ and it’s not liking it. I like not loading a bar on my back 3x a week when I’m doing mass protocol. I’m thinking a nasty superset would be to do the DB inclines and them turn around and do some DB RDLs/SLDLs. With DBs, you can get a stupid long stretch, which might actually be a good compensation for you using block deads for your strength work. Could even stand on some plates and lengthen the ROM old school style.

That’s about the only thing that jumps out to me. I certain what you laid out will work though.
