Boston's Tenth Man?

I have heard this a number of times, but have yet to figure out or find what it is. It is in the song "tessie" by drop kick murphys.

“Boston’s tenth man could not be wrong” What is the story behind it, I googawled it but it just lead me to the lyrics of the song. HELP!

The Royal Rooters, baby!

A baseball team has 9 players right?

The crowd is the 10th man.

It is common in sports to refer to a passionate hometown crowd as an additional man on the team due to the advantage they can give to the home team.

tessie, being sung since our series win in 1903, is pretty much the official song of the red sox. they recorded another version w/ johnny d and bronson and then the murphys did it in 04. i hear that song @ like every game.

Thank you. But I was kind of hoping for a story behind it. Oh well. Thanks for the replies.
