Boston Gyms?

Hola,

I’m looking for a gym in the Boston area (not greater Boston but actually in the city) that at least has a power rack and some heavy dumbells. Powerlifter friendly is of course a plus. I’d really appreciate any help.

Northeasters got a gym a few blocks from my apt and I’m sure it’s got a power rack, but they only allow students. And, well, I don’t go to their goddamn school.

Thanks guys.

You are a PANSY. I just got off the phone with Joe; it’s a good thing I didn’t see this post beforehand, because I would have told him what a PANSY you are.

Eric, I miss your smell. I miss your musk. I’m a mess without you.

But seriously, I was thinking of writing a side note saying I’d be up training by you as much as possible. But, I need an alternative for those days that are packed with classes, but when I still need to get in a session.

Love adoringly,

Supposedly there is a Gold’s Gym on Lansdowne Steet (near Northeastern). Mike’s Gym in Jamaica Plain (pretty close to Northeastern) is okay too.

Matgic,

I hear there is a great gym at Emerson College. They have rows and rows of treadmills and a really sweet Smith Machine.

May the theater be with you,

Soiler

hvae you checked out TPS?

I went there for about a year. Probably the best gym in the city limits, and definitely the best in that area (not to mention most affordable), but no power rack. There are 3 squat racks, one DL platform, 3 flat benches, 2 inclines, and 1 decline, DBs up to 120 or 150 (can’t remember which, but you can bring your own DB handles if you need more weight) and a bunch of adjustable benches.

I know they’re letting a friend of mine bring in chains, bands, and whatever else he feels like, and they were going to let me bring in thick-handled DBs if I bought some (ended up not being able to get them at the time).

The girls at the front desk may give you some funny looks but the staff is generally really friendly. Steve and Ryan (the managers) are really nice guys and they sometimes give free stuff away at random (I must have 5 T-shirts, none of which I had to pay for).

A few big mofos, and a few decently strong guys there, but there are still the pansies you find in any gym. Plenty of hawt asses though (not that you can’t go down Newbury Street for that).

And since it’s right across from Fenway Park, a lot of the visiting teams will train there. My last day there, the Blue Jays came in and trained, so that’s always cool.

If you’re into good beer, hit up Bukowski’s off of Boylston St, next to Hynes Convention Center. 100 varieties of microbrews, burgers for less than $2 before 4:00, and good music most of the time. Drink one for me, knowing I spent most of my last semester in there drinking fantastic beer, writing mediocre music and having great conversations.

I’d rather be at Excel if I’m going to have to commute, but thanks for the thought.

Thanks man, I’ll check it out.

Anybody familiar with Boston ever hear about a gym called Pete’s Power Gym in the South End? It closed in the early 90’s. That’s where I was introduced to the wonderful world of powerlifting. It was the kind of gym that every T-nationer would love to be a member of. The owner, Pete, was an awesome guy.

Yeah, you better get your arse out to see us. We’ll get you strong. And, Sully will teach you about the birds and the bees - not to mention the “Sully Charm.”

Anybody who is ever in the area and needs a place to train is welcome:

I go to the Gold’s on Landsdowne, it has heavy dumbells, I cant remember how high but over 100 Im pretty sure. They have 3 squat racks, and 2 smith machines, no power racks. But it is pretty dirty and its in a basement level, so that is a plus… And i believe it is 49 a month, that or 39 i dont know, I do wish they had power racks though…

Thanks for the tip. I guess I know where I’ll be getting my PWO beer and wings.
