BOLT 9.72 World Record!

The Thunder bolt and Asafa go at it again tonight. So far Asafa posted a 9.90 in the first round, and Usain 10.19. Who knows, may be another WR tonight!!!

Add one more to the sub 9.8 group. Gay ran a 9.77 for a new American record in the quaterfinals yesterday.

he slowed down at the end also he basically cruised to a 9.77 which was ridiculous.

I don’t care if any of them are using, cause I pay my money to see athletes who are bigger, faster and stronger.

But anyone who thinks these guys are clean is delusional.

anyone who thinks every athlete is on drugs is delusional

It is also worth noting that it took over 10 years for Ben Johnson’s chemically assisted 9.79 to be matched, and 17 years before Powell topped it.

It is also worth noting that Florence Griffith-Joyner (RIP) set the 100-meter dash world record in 1988, and 20 years later, STILL holds the world and Olympic record (10.54).

Respect.

9.68 slightly wind aided

Tyson Gay

Fastest time ever

I would hate to be the one to ruin this, but I don’t know how long he’ll last playing football.

Don’t matter, just give him the ball and point, lol.

4.1 m/s isn’t slightly wind aided. That’s over twice the limit. Anyways, that was still an amazing run. I said when Powell set the record at 9.74 that somebody would break 9.7 in Beijing. That is starting to look more and more likely with 3 guys that could potentially do it.

I declare this thread free of steroid talk from this point on. If you want to debate steroids in sports, start a new thread. This thread is to discuss the 100m sprint and the athletes threatening to break the WR, who are all clean as far as the IOC, and most knowledgeable people in the sport, are concerned.

One more post on steroids (sorry tedro).

Bolts progression in the 200/400 is as follows:

2001 - 21.73 (age 14)
2002 - 20.58 (age 15)
2003 - 20.13/45.35 (age 16)
2004 - 19.93 (age 17)
2005 - 19.99 (age 18)
2006 - 19.88/47.53 (age 19)
2007 - 19.75/45.28 (age 20)

When you consider that he ran the 200 in 20.13 as a tall scrawny 16 year old, it is not at all difficult to believe that he is clean. He just has ridiculously good genetics.

Doesn’t matter what it was that was ridiculous. He is the best 100m sprinter ever, very consistent and in that 9.68 he didn’t get as great of a start as he did during his 9.77-which he let off at the end- If it all clicks for him he is going to dominate at Bejing.

That was ridiculous! I can’t wait for the Olympics!

Sorry to burst your bubble.

This is interesting and doesn’t really have to be discussed alongside steroids. Let’s look at Gay and Powell in the 100m in the same way, who are both just now approaching the age where they should be peaking.

Gay
2001 - 10.46 (18, Kentucky high school record that still stands)
2002 - 10.27
2003 - 10.01w
2004 - 10.06 (NCAA champ)
2005 - concentrated more on 200m, 100m best was 10.08
2006 - 9.84
2007 - 9.84
2008 - 9.77 (Age 25)

Powell
2002 - 10.12 (Age 19)
2003 - 10.02
2004 - 9.87
2005 - 9.77
2006 - 9.77 (twice)
2007 - 9.74

They both obviously have ridiculously good genetics, Powell came on at a young like Bolt, too. Gays biggest improvements came during college, this is likely attributed to his first time getting proper coaching and physically maturing, and then again after reconcentrating on the 100m. The endurance he picked up while running the 200 surely helped when he started running the 100 again.

Powell also ran 10.85 in 2001 at age 18.

Based on their progression I would say that Bolt has the best genetics, followed by Powell and then Gay.

I think that eventually Bolt will hold the records for both the 100 and 200.

It’s scary that he is only 21. At the 2008 olympics Bolt will be 25 and should be reaching the peak of his powers. It’s not inconceivable that he could win gold in the 100, 200 and 400.

While Gay is extremely impressive he is very far from being the best ever.

I wouldn’t claim that he is the best ever, but to say he is “very far from (it)” is silly talk, considering no one has ever run the 100m faster. I guess it depends on what criteria you base your decision on.

Carl Lewis is considered by many as the best ever, but even his best times wouldn’t make the medal stand in the 100m in Beijing.
