BOLT 9.72 World Record!

Based on their progression I would say that Bolt has the best genetics, followed by Powell and then Gay.

I think that eventually Bolt will hold the records for both the 100 and 200.

It’s scary that he is only 21. At the 2008 olympics Bolt will be 25 and should be reaching the peak of his powers. It’s not inconceivable that he could win gold in the 100, 200 and 400.

Crazy talk! MJ’s 200m record will stand for 50 years. It’s already been 12 and nobody has come within 3 tenths. All that after it took 17 years to break Mennea’s 9.72.

I don’t think we will see anybody pull a hat trick either. It’s just too hard to effectively train for a 400m and 100m at the same time, especially given the elite talent of today’s athletes. I would actually be very surprised if Bolt continues to run the 400m, given his recent success in the 100m. Wariner won’t be overthrown for a few years either, he’s only 24. He should still be dominating in 2012, and will likely have a WR by then, possibly even this summer.

I will concede that he may be the first one to pull the double in the 100 and 200 since Carl Lewis, but not in 2008. Jamaica may be coming on in the 100, but the US still dominates the 200m. Between Gay, Dix, Spearmon, and Carter (we’ll see who actually goes this weekend), there is a good chance for a 1-2-3 finish. At this point I would actually say Gay has the best chance of winning both.

Except for all the ones that can’t afford the newest high tech training equipment, supplements, and elite trainers. Anyone that does more than run around holding a big rock should be banned.

Fastest time ever

4.1 m/s isn’t slightly wind aided. That’s over twice the limit. Anyways, that was still an amazing run. I said when Powell set the record at 9.74 that somebody would break 9.7 in Beijing. That is starting to look more and more likely with 3 guys that could potentially do it.

Doesn’t matter what it was that was ridiculous. He is the best 100m sprinter ever, very consistent and in that 9.68 he didn’t get as great of a start as he did during his 9.77-which he let off at the end- If it all clicks for him he is going to dominate at Bejing.

While Gay is extremely impressive he is very far from being the best ever.

I wouldn’t claim that he is the best ever, but to say he is “very far from (it)” is silly talk, considering no one has ever run the 100m faster. I guess it depends on what criteria you base your decision on.

Carl Lewis is considered by many as the best ever, but even his best times wouldn’t make the medal stand in the 100m in Beijing.

He has not won an olympic medal yet, and has not set any world records either. If he wins gold at the next two olympics and sets a WR then we can start calling him the best ever. I would say the statement that he is currently “very far from (it)” is quite accurate.

Just to be clear though, I do consider him to be one of the most impressive athletes in the world. Anyone who breaks 10 seconds let alone 9.8 is blazing fast.

Also I have never heard anyone claim that Lewis is the best ever over 100m. When people call him the greatest, they are taking into account all of his events, not just the 100m.

A few months ago I would have agreed with you on the 200m WR, but I am starting to think Bolt will eventually take it. When he ran 9.72 it almost looked as though the race was too short for him.

You are probably right about the triple. The reason I think he is a chance though is that if he gets his 200 time down to 19.3, his speed reserve in the 400 will be ridiculous and could possibly be enough to make up for a lesser focus on speed endurance. A guy who runs 19.3 for 200 can split 21 with ease over the first 200.

I also disagree that Wariner will break the WR, although I hope he does. I just dont think he has enough pure speed compared to MJ.

With regards to Beijing, I think that Bolt will take the 200 and the 100 will be out of Bolt and Asafa.

We will find out soon enough.
