ID,
Doesn’t matter to me if you don’t dig JW, talk all the shit you want. I’d honestly like to hear an educated opinion that varies from mine. Because honestly, JW could fart sideways out of a pair of tighty whities and as long as it was put on wax I’d take listen or two[/quote]
Take it easy, big guy!
Frankly, I had the “De Stijl”, “White Blood Cells”, and “Elephant” albums in my iTunes library.
The thing that attracted to JW initially was his throwback playing. I thought it was great that perhaps he’d lead a young generation back to the greats (I had an argument a while ago with a girl who thought Jack White was a God. When I mentioned his influences, she had no idea who these guys were. So much for educating the young generation).
When I started reading reviews from rock critics (they were calling him brilliant), it pissed me off because over 3 decades ago the fucking critics lambasted Led Zeppelin for “borrowing” from blues greats. Now the critics were seemingly ignorant of the blues past while crediting White with his “innovations” (White even borrows from Jimmy Page… which is cool). Although I admire his taste in music, his “toss-off” approach to the blues and guitar in general, he’s doesn’t inspire me otherwise (though some of his lesser songs like “We’re Gonna Be Friends” have a certain delicacy and poignancy that I enjoy)
Anyway, I threw all my White Stripes stuff out after that and went back to listening to the originals.

ID, You’re a grown man and you like what you like. I won’t try to change your opinion what so ever.
I see what you’re saying, I don’t think he’s an “innovator” either, more of a conduit for sounds long past.
I respect his stance though, by letting folks know where modern blues and rock music came from. Plus he’s from Michigan, my age, and I’m a homer like that.
You’re right about people not reaching back further than the material he puts out, but what can you do. People are lazy, and if they aren’t a fan of history or finding the origin of things they won’t do the research.
I mean, I’m sure there are emo bands out there whos’ main influence is Green Day but they haven’t cared to check anything deeper than that.
Have you seen the documentary “It Might Get Loud?” I’d recommend that to you as well. JW sits down and plays with Jimmy Page and the Edge from U2.
