Black = Track and Field Advantage?

Xiang Liu of China holds the 110m hurdles world record.

One fairly amusing side note. I was actually engaged in a conversation with somebody who said, in full seriousness, that the reason black people jump higher is that they have another calf muscle. Not bigger calf muscles. Not a higher percentage of FT fibers. Not a higher insertion point. An actual additional muscle that “white” people don’t have. So apparently there is a gastroc, a soleus and negrocep? This person had no answer for what happened with people who are mixed. Do they get it on one leg and not the other? Unfortunately, all of my questions could not be answered. The sad thing is, she was a college graduate. The education in our country is awesome!

its also possible the girl graduated in a field very far from anything having to do with anatomy, probaly a business major who had to take a couple basic Bio classes, or had a roomate who did and just got something absolutely wrong but had it memorized to be so anyway.

yeah of course it does. i just didnt want anyone saying “well how can black people be so good at basketball if russians keep kickin kobe’s ass at the Olys?”

=)

Their skin absorbs the solar energy better because they have more pigment. This causes their muscles to warm up more easily than white guys. So they spend less time warming up and more time actually practicing the sport or whatever it is.
So the black guy will get more practice out of a day than the milky one so getting better at it.

that’s how the cookie crumbles

Chinese are going to make a huge impact at the upcoming olympics, it’ll be instresting to see how the dust settles post beijing

But I train inside…

going off-topic here…but jeremy wariner is really only 6’0 and 155? holy crap

About black and white people.
To think the color of skin somehow makes you faster is absurd. If it did, people would paint themselves or get really really tanned in order to get as black and fast as possible.

There are so many different genes that needs to turn out right for sprinting.
Ability to learn how to generate high frequency motor neuron signals and to cordinate them for good body cordination.
The right biomechanics, relating to bones and tendon insertion points. The ability to develop musclemass of high twitch fibres.
Things you are born with that wont show in your skin color that do make a difference if you intend to run faster then the rest.

Geography still makes it hard for genes to spread equally all over the world. Which means groups all over the world will stray in different genetic direction depending on lots of factors. It has nothing to do with racism if 2 traits, speed and dark skincolor, happened to be more important evolutionary factors in west africa then in the rest of the world. So what?
All it means, in mathematical terms, is that given no other fact then that a person is of west african heritage that person is more likely to become a good sprinter. But given the fact that his parents although from west africa were slow as molasses and black as the night, would you still bet that this person is good sprinter?

To fully understand how evolution and genetics work is possibly more demanding then learning university level calculus.
Thats how complex the workings of genetics seem to me anyway.

Racism, well if it makes you feel good, I see no other reason…

Bullshit. I dare you to find even ONE difference between me and any other black man.

Do you listen to Biggie or Pac?

I alternate days so that I am more black. Listening to only one makes you a “half and half”.

Wow man. I’m not one to kiss anyone’s ass but you are a quick mufucka.
Fixed that for ya

They need hot sauce, the professor, escalade, shane boogie, half man, and main event.

Ahhh, you are right. It was beat June 12. Track and Field News had an outdated list.

Like many posters above I would say its a mix of many different factors origin(genetics) and culture being the most prominent. For example I am Jamaican, and from my point of view, the reason why Jamaican athletes are fast is because

1)Like it or not our background is based in the slave trade, I dont know how true this is but I actually heard that the most aggressive slaves were sent to Jamaica.

2)Our background has required us to be fast to survive, but one could say that all races had to be fast or developed physically to survive at one time or another, however blacks have been required to do this for much longer and up to fairly recent time so it is still fresh in the blood.

3)Track and Field is in Jamaica’s culture, from kindergarten all the way to the senior level it is avidly followed and practiced. Actually more people locally come to see the High School Championships than the National Championships.

That is just my take on this issue from my experience

You have to be pretty damn dumb to believe that; I don’t care what field it is in.

Good post.
Agreed.

The number of great sprinters produced by Jamaica (including those who ended up running for other countries) is astounding when you consider how small it’s population is.

I agree with that article. It sucks, knowing I can’t possess the speed/vertical I want because of my race. I’m still gonna get it up as far as I can, but it won’t ever be as good as it could.

What are you talking about? Unless you are specifically interested in the 100 meters sprint event, I really doubt your race could be a limiting factor. This is the worst kind of attitude to have in any sport.

Most black guys don’t have that speed either. It is much more than skin color.
