I’m a Rush fan, and appreciate Peart’s contributions, but nothing he ever did gave me goosebumps like Bonham did.
Listen to “Achille’s Last Stand.” NOBODY has ever done rolls with such speed. The whole song is a showcase of of Bonham’s raw power, control, inventiveness, impeccable tone, and pure balls.

Laugh it up all you want, jj. The Seahawks may be the champs, but once baseball season rolls around you’ll be reminded just how pathetic the sports scene is up there in Seattle. While I’ll be watching the Warriors and the Giants play, you’ll be pushing pins into your fucking Kevin Durant doll and paying major league prices to go watch that AA team wearing Mariners uniforms.[/quote]
Reigning Superbowl Champion Seattle Seahawks has a nice ring to it, don’t you think?
And while I appreciate your concern for my sports well being, summer is simply gorgeous here in the Pac NW. I just had the good folks at Foss Audio gut the stock stereo in my truck and put in a new super system so i can listen to my Rush collection from start to finish while on my way to some glorious outdoor activities–like waterskiing on the Columbia river–until football season rolls around again. Sorry California doesn’t have any fucking water to speak of.

I definitely believe that it takes the length of your entire Rush collection to drive to what you would consider a “glorious outdoor activity”. What exactly is your idea of a glorious outdoor activity anyways? Driving down I-5 at breakneck speed while racing to finish a case of beer before you hit Chico?
Beautiful summers in Seattle are what we down here in the Bay Area refer to as “another shitty January”.

There’s a fill at about the 2-minute mark in that song that is absolutely insane. I think he does either 1/32’s all the way down, or a REALLY fast triplet pattern. There’s another at about the 2:30 mark or so where he does an incredible fill with the snare, hi-hat, and crash.

Bonzo is one of the greats of course. DB is just trying to prick me up with his shit about Peart. Next thing you know he’ll be talking shit about Buddy Rich just to get a rise out of me.

Buddy Rich was a fucking pedophile and a Raiders fan. Fuck him.
What the hell is your idea of glorious outdoor activities anyways, jj? What do you guys up in Seattle file under that title? What, do you get liquored up and beat the fuck out of your wife while standing in your backyard? Chase ten-year-old boys down the street on a bright, sunny day?

Tony Williams. Simon Phillips.

Tony Williams was fast as fuck, for sure. But could he come back in from such a fast fill right into the groove the way Bonham could? No, of course not, since Williams wasn’t much for the groove to begin with. He’s more of the Mitch Mitchell of jazz drumming; 2/3 of all the notes he plays are parts of some sort of fill.
I think Tony Williams is one of the greatest jazz drummers ever, certainly the best to ever play with Miles Davis. But his overall skill level wasn’t quite up to snuff with Bonham. The feel, the sense of dynamics, and the overall power and unmistakable style are all slight notches below Bonham. But Williams makes my top 10 list every time.

Achille’s last stand may be one of the greatest rock songs ever made. Everything about it is mind blowing.
