Black Sabbath the Best or Worst Band

I talked shit about black sabbath for years, said they were terrible and all their songs are the same. Told my dad he overrates ozzy.

So to prove it I downloaded black sabbath vol 4.

Instantly because one of my favourite albums. Downloaded paranoid, I always thought that album sucked and paranoid and war pigs were liked by people who didn’t even listen to the songs kinda like people say they like led zeppelin when all they know is one line from stairway to heaven. Again goes into my favourite albums list straight away.

Even though lots of songs ozzy in his usual annoying style is impossible to understand, the overall body of work by Black sabbath is pretty fucking good.

Rate black sabbath on two points.

  1. Your personal enjoyment of them out of 10
  2. Your opinion of them in the list of all time great bands

Neither. They have some good songs (heaven and hell) but that’s about it.
3/10. While I’m at: Jimi Hendrix is overrated and the beatles suck.

To leap from what was being done at that time to what they did musically was incredible.

Personal enjoyment 10/10

All time greats- (within the genre of hard rock/metal)- I dunno. Too subjective.

Supernaut ranks high on all time favorites/ gets the blood flowing types of songs.

Black Sabbath: not my all-time favorite, but worst of all time? Terrible? Ozzy’s not the only one on fucking drugs.

Great Band
A ‘plankowner’ of heavy metal music.

Spot on.

although considered the fathers of “Doom Metal” I’d rate them as 2.5/10
not in my top bands. got burned out on them along with groups like zep, skynard, and almost any band on classic rock radio.

They were only good with Dio and since they only had him for a short time overall I would have to give them a less than great rating. I have no problem putting them on a list of good (mainstream) bands it just depends how long the list is.

Way before Dave Lombardo ever struck a drum- Bill Ward was destroying it.

Personal enjoyment - 9/10

All-time rank (mine, being as objective as possible) - Top 10

Their contribution to metal alone puts them in the top 25. Their endurance through changing from Ozzy to Dio to Ozzy is incredible.

Ian Gillan from Deep Purple was in the line up for a little while too but that album really did suck pretty badly. I think it was “Born Again”.

Definitely a cool song, I prefer this cover.

0/10 Sorry guys. They made a few great songs. However, I hope the whole osbourne clan disappears in a murder suicide pact.! The Osborne’s reality shows and years of shitty black sabbath music negates all the earlier cool stuff Black Sabbath did.

OK someone touched on this.

Jimi Hendrix fucking sucks. I downloaded all his albums and they are all slow dull bags of shit. Fuck Jimi Hendrix. How on earth is that guy remotely good? All along the watch tower is his only mildly decent song, which he took from bob dylan and made worse. His guitar playing is so Liberace it becomes beige and his heroin induced slow talking crap makes me want to be sick.

Worst artist ever!

What do people like about him?

THIS X1000

It’s easy to take for granted things which always existed, which i do because sabbath/hendrix/beatles/zepplin have always been around. I’ve grown up since birth listening to that music. Lemmy had a profound quote that he “remembers before there was rock and roll” and sabbath was a band that helped change the game.

I personally dont listen to Sabbath’s music much, im more into zepplin/allman bros. rock/blues vs. sabbath/metal genre but there is no denying the importance of their music. The ford model T is a piece of shit by todays standards of what a vehicle should be, but those standards would be different had there been no model T. Same with rock/metal and sabbath.

Ding ding ding! 10,000,000 points.

You’re off your damn rocker if you don’t think they’re one of the top 10 rock bands of all time. They literally redefined rock into metal, set the standard and course for all of metal as we know it: black, doom, power, straight heavy, it doesnt matter. It doesn’t matter if you don’t like listening to them either, they’re still a corner stone.

I personally do not listen to them a ton, and although I enjoy them I am into faster stuff most times, but that has not bearing on their greatness (I do understand the overplayed on classic rock comment, but again only like two of their songs ever get airplay on classic rock mainstream radio).

Enjoyment: 5ish, plus or minus
Greatness/Influence: 10. Theres no way it could be any other way if you like metal.

Of course 10/10.
raises mano cornuta
Muscial hindsight can always be unmerciful - “Holst sounds like weak soundtracks”, "Beatles sound like run-of-the-mill britpop"etc

not hindsight as I was around back then listening to them(were you?) but just was never a big fan. like when everyone was talking about Clapton but to me Jeff Beck was the better guitarist.
1968 also included Deep Purple, Alice Cooper, Grand Funk, Accept, Rush, and Zep. before that there was Elf(Dio), Scorpions, Blue Oyster Cult, Steppenwolf, Iron Butterfly, Hendrix and the Who. in “69” you had Judas Priest, Mountain, Uriah Heep, and Hawkwind to name a few. lots of influences there.

just rediscovering an older band doesn’t mean that they are the best ever. I never attacked anyone or their opinions or taste in music but answered the OP’s questions.
I’ve always loved music and I used to play classical, rock, blues and metal but without any commercial success. I like what I like and I don’t try to make myself seem better by trying to put someone’s taste in music down.

it was the time period. Hendrix was doing things that no one had ever heard before. it didn’t matter that there were better guitar players out there he was different and different was good. the music was called “acid rock” for a reason, just like Kyuss is called stoner rock.
as for now I really don’t know, maybe flashbacks or contact highs, but I know a lot of people that love him and hate that “God Awful Metal” I like.

I swear that Wright Flyer was a real piece of shit. It was made out of wood, who builds planes out of wood? Were those Wright brothers inbred or something?
