I don’t personally need one no, but if you want to put together something, knock yourself out. What it would have to do with anything would be interesting.

What it would have to do with anything? You are the one making an issue because the majority in America aren’t represented through a month or day of dedication as if you don’t understand how redundant this would be.

Kind of like Black History month. So African-American contributions are more special and deserving? I don’t really want a day or month for German white heterosexuals. I could frankly care less. But one is no more or less deserving than the other. Perhaps you should reread my first post, maybe try and grasp my point, (which you can certainly take as valid or not.) and stop making “issues” where there are none to begin with. You know, inform yourself.

Germans, have octoberfest to express their culture, and your are right to acertain degree there is still a little prejudice asgainst them .In my area there are a lot of german families whos ancesters were thrown out of germany during the 30 yrs. war.Its not uncommon for people to say Theres one of those knot head tight ass germans, trying to cheat someone out of something.

Well,I for one can’t wait for Irish American day,or St.Pattys Day.I celebrate my ethnic history by getting loaded and acting a bigger fool than I normally do.Seriously, this thread has gotten way off the mark.My favorite African American is BB King.Great music.Without him,we have no Elvis,or probably a different sounding Elvis, and our music now would probably sound very different.
A-Freakin’ MEN. BB King is the MAN.

Also, since it hasn’t been mentioned yet, I’d also like to give some respect out for “Shoeless” Joe Jackson and all the other African American atheletes who pushed the envelope and by their own acts of courage helped bring an end to segregation.

Kind of off topic here and maybe somebody else already posted it, I havent’t checked but… Anyone else think it’s fucked up that black history month is the shortest month of the year? Very telling. “Throw 'em a bone. Anything big happening in February? Gieve 'em February.”

Professor X, look I can see where you’re coming from but when you say other races haven’t been enslaved … you need to check your info. You’ve accused everyone here about not checking their facts, but on this one you haven’t. Read about some history and you’ll find that just about all of the civilizations throughout history have had slaves.

The Chinese used slaves to build much of the great wall and some of them are buried there today. Roman slaves were tossed into an arena as gladiators. Egyptians had slaves before they enslaved the Hebrews. These are just a few examples.

I think you misread what I wrote. very rarely throughout our history has any one entire RACE of people been enslaved. There have been slaves based on status and social level, however, aside from the Jews and dark skinned Africans, what other race was singled out as SLAVE? Coming together for you now?
Coming together for me now? What the fuck is that supposed to mean? Last time I checked slavery was slavery.

Or, maybe, it is because Fredrick Douglass and Lincoln were both born in the month of February and Carter G. Woodson–a black historian–thought it appropriate.

Perhaps if schools taught American history including all the different races that contributed to the development of this country then we wouldn’t need a Black history month. But as long as only Whites are included in the general history education of this country we will need history months of another races to make their contributions known.

Which school does this? I learned about plenty of Black influentials in History class.

Oh, and as for appreciation - Medger Evers. A great but tragic story.
Was this before or after Black history month started?

What the hell are you talking about? You think she made a million off of the license for his speeches? She wanted control over his legacy AS HIS WIFE and had every right to do so. She used this info to further his cause (racial equality), which was also her cause.

Booker T. Washington, interesting as hell, controversial, and, above all else, believed that regardless of what others thought of his skin color, through hard work and education, he and his race could achieve whatever they set their minds to.

Some favorite quotes:

“Character, not circumstances, makes the man.”

“I let no man drag me down so low as to make me hate him.”

“I have learned that success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has had to overcome while trying to succeed.”

“No man, who continues to add something to the material, intellectual and moral well-being of the place in which he lives, is left long without proper reward.”

“One man cannot hold another man down in the ditch without remaining down in the ditch with him.”

Do all other races get a special month?

Different minority groups do have their own month and this info was provided by “drilldaddy”. Get more informed. As far as necessity, we have had people log on here completely clueless about what african americans have contributed in this country. This information is not being universally taught across the country and many are in the dark about their very own heritage. We can pretend that race does not matter the moment that others see everyone as an individual instead of a racial stereotype. Having a month devoted to recognition of the acheivments of minorities is not racist. What was racist was the disinformation and lack of respect that prompted the need for its existance to begin with.
Good post!

Shoeless Joe Jackson was white. He played for the White Sox. They were also called the Black Sox because they allegedly threw the World Series.

I heard Bush was about to sign legislation that would force Black History Month to skip every leap year.

He doesn’t want that extra day once every four years.

Yea I don’t think Shoeless Joe probably cared too much for black ballplayers

Interesting. Last I checked, someone could not morph or change their skin color unless they are Micheal Jackson. Having your entire race enslaved and marked as less than human means that everywhere you go, you are considered less than a man. Not one other race has experienced that on that level aside from ancient Jews. Slavery may just be slavery to you, but when there is no escaping it and the effects last so long even after slavery, the race in question isn’t even accepted into society as an equal until over a century later, slavery is not just slavery. It becomes a social scar that affects several generations after the act. It means those “freed slaves” can’t vote, can’t get paid as equals, can’t eat in the same room as the majority, can’t drink out of the same water fountains as the majority, can’t go to college (thusly why historically black colleges exist to begin with), and despite inventions and innovations, can’t even be looked upon as an intelligent force to be recognized.

That is what that is supposed to mean. Perhaps if you pulled your head out of your ass just long enough to realize that your world view may need minor ammending, you just might be able to understand this yourself.

That movie may not have been uh…“historically accurate”

It was, after all, called Field of Dreams.

But then again…who couldn’t like James Earl Jones?

Luke Skywalker?

Nice article. Who is “Pox”?

…you sure he was white? Maybe I’m getting him confused with somebody else.

Shit, ask me about ancient China and I can name the first ten dynasties including the warring states period, but I can’t remember the difference between shoeless joe and some other dude who I’m getting him mixed up with.

gah!

Jackie Robinson would be who you are looking for. It’d be worth it to read up on all the shit the man endured.
