But this just brings a tear to my eye everytime… I laugh every time. From one of the greatest artistic film pieces of all time:

Maybe everybody is nice now because there are fewer neighborhood bars?

Instead of around the corner, with your friends at some hole-in-the-wall, everybody is mixing together at the bar in Caraba’s in the sanitized strip mall. Now instead of jokes it’s just internet videos.

:joy::joy: my Dad made me watch movies like that and Harlem Nights with him when I was like 15 or 16.

Classics.

“Well remember that Marxism is European in origin also. That’s one of the most deadly and unjust ideas ever put into practice. Trial by combat is fairer than “to each according to his need”.”

The closest thing to a system based on “to each according to his need”, is Western European welfare states with a progressive tax system. To clarify: You pay taxes according to your ability to pay (your income), and you recive support when you need it (Public education for your childred, financial support when you are unemployed, healt care when you are sick etc). It jives perhaps not with your libertarian ideology, but less fair than trial by combat, is a bit far fetched IMHO.

Also what makes Marxism (the writings of Karl Marx) evil? Is it his writings on alianation? His analysis of Capitalism? His theory of history (Historical materialism)? Or is it his stated end goal in the Communist Manifesto?:

“In place of the old bourgeois society, with its classes and class antagonisms, we shall have an association, in which the free development of each is the condition for the free development of all.” (Marx, 1848).

Sounds almost like he wrote that the individual was an end unto itself, and that everyones freedom was predicated on a societal system that shared this notion. How evil, indeed.

Your Dad did right by you. I could watch these movies a hundred times and they don’t get old. It’s better than Star Wars…

How can you go to the bar when you have to take little Jimmy or Susie to soccer practice, piano lessons, then a school performance, after which you grab McDonalds..they do homework and then go to bed?

I honestly think all the crap we have kids doing is detrimental to families..but seeing as I don’t have kids yet, I can’t say I’m making a fully informed decision..I’ll find out in 5-7 years God-Willing.

I dunno if they’re better than Star Wars…but 4 5 and 6 are so damn long! Parody movies have trouble stretching out that long.

A few years ago I picked up some hours at a little fab shop building trucks and stuff. The owner was an old Hungarian WW2 vet that came over here at 14, lied about his age to enlist, then went back and kicked ass. Upon meeting him our first exchange went like this:

Him: " McC…? You ona does drunken Irish motherfuckers?"

Me: “Nah. I’m one of the ones that steals everything in sight.”

Him “I’ll cut your fuckin hands off!”

Me: “I already stole all your knives!”

That guy was a riot to work with. 8 hours would fly by in what seemed like minutes.

“From each according to his ability, to each according to his need.”

Who decides what you need? Who decides when you’ve given enough according to your ability? Marxism requires a very powerful government to rearrange (purge) society and redistribute wealth.

The first rule of government is that those in power will eventually abuse those over whom they have power given time and oppertunity. The more power, the more abuse. This happens every, single, time (Marxist or not). It’s an immutable law of human nature.

If you are truly intellectually honest read about life in Red China, the USSR, Cuba, Vietnam, Venezuela from the people who actually lived it. Millions purged and killed on purpose, and by incompetence. Stare into the void.

The European utopias are starting to show cracks. They are jailing people for sedition when they speak out against policies in Sweden. Sedition laws… in 2017.

Europe has had a nicer time with socialism light because they’ve alowed a robust free market and (gasp) classism to help support the poor. But they also had the US to bail them out of their last throat slitting war with each other and underwrite their defense budgets.

I think there are a number of reasons for this phenomenon, and I think one of the biggest is the seeming anonymity of the internet–4chan, etc., etc. Doesn’t matter what you say or how you act because nobody can see you or find you (meaning regular persons not governments, if you’re smart about it). Combine that with other issues…

I’d agree on both counts. You have to have a very close knit friendship and a long-established mutual respect for that to happen, as pat said.

Two of the funniest movies in the history of film…I am so glad they were made back then because lord knows we couldn’t laugh at them today.

This is why Blazing Saddles and other Mel Brooks movies are part of my litmus test for new acquaintances to enter the friend circle. I’m actually only partly joking.

Thought experiment: We live in Marxian utopia. We both work at a factory making widgets. The minimum is 5 widgets a month per person. You are awesome and make 50 widgets in a month. I’m lazy and make 5. You live alone. I live with 5 other people who are invalid that can’t work. The government says everyone makes 500 rubles to eat.

Pay day comes.
I get 3000 rubles.
You get 500 rubles.

How many widgets you making next month?

This sounds like a silly example till you realize that the USSR had more airable land than the USA and couldn’t feed it’s people. They have more of nearly every resource. Remove incentive, society crumbles.

@pat Yes, I’ve actually had people tell me, “You’re always saying hello, even after I’ve seen you once,” and “you’re always saying thank you.”

I’ve responded, “I don’t ignore people who I know or work with, even I see them multiple times a day”, and “How can one say thank you too much if they’re simply saying thank you for every polite or good deed and action that comes their way?”

I even have a habit of just giving a grin to people instead of saying hello after I’ve seen them a few times in a day. I just think it’s damn rude to dismiss other people.

I do not have the time right now to make a proper response, but will take the time tomorrow. I am also thinking of making a thread of its own for this topic, since this thread is dedicated to race.
