No guys this is great. I am glad you are correcting me on this subject, for I am fairly new. Judging from my research I came to the conclusion that this mental illness goes a bit further then ruining lives. I think there are all stages of this illness, but we just do not realize it. This is great info guys; your point of views will be given full thought. Keep them coming?
Stages of the illness?
Maybe our next thread should be titled:
What stage of bigorexia are you?
I am at least at stage 13, I found the secret decoder ring and killed the troll under the bridge.

Are you actually saying that occasionally having to blow my nose (mucus!) and enjoying a nice walk (restless leg syndrome!) aren’t that serious? I don’t know man, I think I need help. Help from a drug.

One of them includes shaving your head…what year did you suffer from this stage???
FUCK!! I shaved my head…almost exactly around the time I got serious about bodybuilding. That means shaving your head is a gateway drug to bodybuilding!!!
Dear Lord, think of all of the bald children at risk!

This would be called the “Moderate” stage.
One cannot stop thinking about eating right and growing their muscles. Also the less volume the hair is, the smaller the head appears, thereby creating the illusion of being bigger. This is a psychological issue and a mental stage that can be corrected if caught early and recovery sucess is about 50%. Once past this and to Moderate-Advaced stage, recovery is 15% at best.
Shit, that’s it! I’m quitting the gym and dropping to 130 lbs. That is a healthy weight for someone my height, according to FitDay.com. I would rather have a healthy brain than a healthy body.
Hey OP, please quote me. I have to write a research paper myself and I kept wondering what it would be like to have somebody quote me.
Don’t forget to change Professor X’s name to “Mr. T” or something when you quote him as a prime example of somebody in the latter stages of the disorder. Gotta respect your sources’ confidentiality, you know.
This kinda shit really gets on my nerves. In every damn area of life anybody can think of you can dig up some infinitesimally small percentage that throw common sense to the wind in the name of a self obsessed campaign of destruction. Somewhere as I type this there’s a thumb wrestling fanatic tossing his life away for a chance to chase an unrealistic dream for which he is clearly not equipped to fulfill.
eeeh if you wiki it and read the definition it doesn’t sound as bad. i’m sure there could be people with the condition, though i think OP could have maybe more clearly described it.
from wiki: “Muscle dysmorphia is fairly rare and simple obsession with working out. Bodybuilding does not fit the criteria of a body dysmorphic disorder.”
seems like its only people that get depressed because they think they are smaller then average, even if they are bigger.

“Muscle dysmorphia”, a disorder that involves someone who sees themselves as differently than they really are (this would include small guys who think they are built as well), is not what we are discussing. “Bigorexia” is. Bigorexia, by taking its name from “anorexia” implies a severe health impairing mental disorder where someone feels they aren’t big enough.
“The Man Whose Arms Exploded” was just on TLC. I take back my earlier stance on bigorexia. Gregg Valentino has bigorexia. The doctor who apparently coined the term was on the show as well, and I disagreed with almost everything he said. Maybe his book has a more compelling argument, or he might have been more interesting if he could have directly commented on Valentino.
“Muscle dysmorphia is a disorder in which a person becomes obsessed with the idea that he or she is not muscular enough. Those who suffer from muscle dysmorphia tend to hold delusions that they are “skinny” or “too small” but are often above average in musculature. Sometimes referred to as bigorexia or reverse anorexia nervosa, it is a very specific type of body dysmorphic disorder.”
then again its from wiki, whatever it doesn’t really matter unless your taking prozac because you think your too small

First, wikipedia is not the end of discussion on definitions even though it is an interesting resource. Not only that, but this statement; “
Muscle dysmorphia is a disorder in which a person becomes obsessed with the idea that he or she is not muscular enough.
” would include EVERY DAMN PERSON WHO TRIES TO GAIN MUSCLE MASS.
If you can’t see the problem there, I don’t know what to tell you.
I mean, who the hell tries to gain muscle mass when they already think they are muscular enough? The entire idea is retarded and must have been thought up by some geek who had his lunch money stolen one too many times.

yeah i agree, hence the “then again its from wiki”. anyway all i was pointing out that it looked to me like the condition was only applicable to people who have a distorted vision of themselves, and suffer due to the distortions. maybe your right and maybe its just some people making up bullshit, whatever

From what I’ve seen, most humans have distorted images of themselves. That means we are all insane.

LOL!!! I’m laughing, but how many people think the same things about themselves in all cases that other people think of them?
