I always thought Barnes was a sad character. He seemed to me to have given up on himself and the only way he could keep going was to be as hard as possible on the outside. But, the scene where he walked into the bunker and called out all the stoners in the platoon is one of my all-time favorite badass scenes.
There have been some fine nominations here but there is one clear and present winner here. The Man who won a Congressional Medal of Honour. Had a real life body count that would make taratenio blush. Was considered to pretty but when he played himself in the movie the dorector had to be careful not to show a closeup of his eyes whenhe was holding a gun because they scared people.

Audie Murphy definitely. As far as fictional badasses: RobRoy, Oldboy, Gladiator, Highlander, …I have a lot of movies to rewatch. Some corrections…Jason Statham seems like a cool guy, but he’s basically a diver who learned to fake martial arts. Steven Seagal is an asshole, who beat and/or cheated on several women while feigning his douchebaggy activism and faux-buddhism. And, Christian Bale was the good guy in the remake of 3:10 to Yuma not Russell Crowe (although he was pretty bad ass as well.)

I don’t know, I’m torn. The single shot fight scene and his “dentistry” put in him top contention, but I’d like to believe a true badass could find his way out of a room in less than 15 years.
The asian film references made me think of Kakihara as well from “Ichi the Killer”. Not a lot of bad-asses can claim that they deep fried one of their enemies. As someone else said, Chow Yun Fat in pretty much anything is badass. Let me qualify that a little more. Chow Yun fat in pretty much anything directed by John Woo is badass, particularly Tequila from “Hard Boiled”.
