You should be banned for even thinking such things.

you’re right, Bob is more my type anyway.

Never underestimate water weight. I was watching the show a couple weeks ago about the “1000 lbs man”. The doctor that cared for him estimated when he came to the hospital (at over 1000) that he had around 230 lbs of water weight. Thats almost 25% of his weight.

Another perspective is the first season of Ultimate fighter Bobby, the light heavyweight lost around 20 lbs in 48 hrs to make weight. That was a pretty well conditioned and far from obese athelete.

LMOA

Just an FYI…

Pauline Nordin (who has appeared on a few threads and in the “Powerful Images” section) is one of the trainers in the Swedish version of “The Biggest Loser”.

Yeah, she could train me anyway she likes. Hopefully rough.

I think your post is a joke on so many levels.

Maybe in T-Nation terms, basing a contest on how much weight you lose is lame. But for the 350 lb people, I see nothing wrong judging a contest in these terms. These are sedentary, very obese people with a lot of weight to lose. They are not athletes following the T-Nation lifestyle. At least they are doing it the old fashion way instead of wimping out with stomach stapling surgery.

No problem whatsover. Women or men don’t have an advantage since it is percentage weight loss, not total weight loss. I suppose if you come in (man or woman) and you are severely obese, you have more weight to lose thus your percentage weight lost could be higher if you are motivated enough to lose it all.

Secondly, teaching the general public that losing weight as a whole is good is wrong. But since I only saw the last show I don’t really know if they talked about weight gain due to an increase in muscle mass. Again, I am a little more than riffed at the prospect that we are teaching people skinny at all cost is good.[/quote]

I don’t think the message is “skinny at all cost is good” at all. It’s showing that obese people can get motivated to lose weight the old fashion way with diet and exercise. I think your post is way over the top regarding this show. And give me a break on the muscle mass issue. These people come into the show 350 lbs and above. They have so much damn fat to lose that a small gain in muscle mass will be negligible in the overall results.

If anyone watched this show from the beginning (I’ve seen roughly every other episode), it’s hard to argue that the trainers on the show are friggin’ morons. Example: the show where the guy totally blew out his hamstring/quad/whatever because the female trainer had 250+lb guys doing friggin sprints!!! WTF woman!!! Can you say “way too much impact for an obese dude”? Also, I can see having very obese people doing water resistance training in order to protect their joints, but after they’ve lost close to 100lbs, the trainers still had them swimming for aerobic training. WTF!!! Water is one hell of an insulator (as if these people needed any more insulation) and definitely not the best exercise for burning fat (probably the last exercise I would choose). Especially when they had access to weights, treadmills, stairmasters, and a huge mountain of a friggin’ hill right behind their house! It’s my opinion that these people lost weight despite the atmosphere they were in rather than because of it. Shit, if your entire universe was geared toward weight loss, you’d have to lose something after 4 months or so. Those who had the self-discipline (yes, getting fit is all about self-discipline despite what most fatties want people to think) and the desire to move their asses are the ones who lost weight. Can you tell that the whole premise of this show offended the hell out of me? When I see a grown man crying because the producers want him to walk across a nearly 2-foot wide board for about 30 feet or so and he can’t because he’s already fallen in the water 3 times, really convinced me that I was seeing the bottom of the barrel as far as pathetic human beings are concerned. OK. Rant over. (And thank God the show is too)

I remember that episode and I had the same reaction although I’d still like to hit it!

As a matter of interest I saw the final show last night and decided that winnng based on how much weight one loses is lame.

First off, women, as a general rule would be at a disadantage since they are usually lighter compared to men. The woman from the show was origianlly 220ish pounds and looked to be around 5.5ish ft tall. To beat what the men lost she would have had to lose 50% of her original weight which means she would have had to weigh a sickly 110lbs in the end. Does anyone else see a problem with that?

No woman will ever win…that is all I was implying. This says nothing of the accomplishents in and of themselves–which I never alluded to.

Use your brain for thinking before you reply to a post–it is impossible for a woman to compete with men who were originally twice as big as her. As a matter of generalization the margins tend to plateau as one becomes lighter and lighter – which she is certain to acheive first.

As far as the muscle mass issue, I stated up front I was unsure of what the shows stance was; however if I weighed 350lbs and lost 150 in BF but gained 10lbs LBM–which is not unheard of in undertrained individuals–that is a +3.5% change in body weight. I beleive that is the margin that the one man won by. It is not inconceivable to beleive that it could happen. If I were a gambling man I would put my money on the fattest “man” in relation to their overall size.

You and I both know that using body weight as a measure of success means nothing. Percentage bodyfat maybe…but then again men would tend to lose that contest because women tend to carry a larger percentage of body fat than men.

I spend my life figuring out how to best take measuremnts and I can assure you this neither measures is fair. And yes, in my mind this is nothing more than a media diversion to get us to go out and buy weight loss supps.

I go back and forth. One show I think she’s hot and the next I think she’s a skank. So, I guess that means I’d hit it. Who am I kidding…

Yeah my mom watches the show and they flashed to a guy doing some sweet 5lb db curls with a leg off the ground. Still… atleast they’re getting them to do something…
