Professor ate 80% Twinkies and snack cakes and lost 27lbs. ALL of his blood markers (sugar, HDL, Ldl, Trigs) improved. For the general population that doesn’t exercise at all. Calories are of supreme importance.

Yeah, but what they don’t say is that he lost 5 lb of LBM in this and barwly cracked 25% fat. So
fucking stupid. Of course if you cut food intake by 30% of your total calories you’ll lose weight.

Additionally, there are other markers of health, not just cholesterol and triglycerides. Markers of inflammation and a ton of other things matter in “health”.

This story absolutely pissed me off when it came out because it doesn’t tell you anything new (chopping calories to 66% of your intake means you lose weigh
no shit), and I viewed it as irresponsible to pander–how many people went “well shit I can get lean eating junk food, throw my my twinkies!” after this? I personally ran into about 10 people since that story who uaed it in conversation with me to try to justify shit diets.

Also, something I was tipped onto was that reports of his behavior were that it altered during the diet–he couldn’t focus, repeatedly lost his train of thought in class, etc. So I suppose if you want your mental capacity to drop as well as your lean body mass
great.

We are talking about population health. Not bodybuilding or optimal health. @Zeppelin795 asked why Americans are fatter. They eat more calories.

The French eat double the saturated fat and have higher smoking rates (French paradox). They have less heart disease and cancer than Americans.

Body fat functions like an endocrine organ, too much fat exacerbates metabolic syndrome. It affects how incoming calories are metabolized and stored, anabolic hormone levels, inflammation etc


If you take a fat guy and cut calories by 30 percent and lower his waste circumference and fix lipids and insulin resistance his chances for all-cause morbidity go down. That can’t be argued.

Your reaction to this guy’s experiment is exactly why it needed done. The professor asked his nutrition students what would happen if he ate a hypocaloric diet based on trans/saturated fats, high fructose corn syrup, refined grains etc
 Their hypothesis was that he would lose weight and screw up every other health marker.

That’s what the professor thought would happen also. If you read studies about those compounds in rats and some limited work in humans all signs point to them being poison (when eaten in surplus). But for this N=1 experiment eating these “poisons” in a deficit didn’t harm the markers tracked.

At no point did the professor recommend anyone eat this way. He regrets it got labeled a “diet” when it was an “experiment”. He said if he knew it would have got as publicised as it did he would have made it a much more controlled experiment. It was for the class only.

Thoroughly disagree. My primary beef isn’t with the “school project” portion. It was with the media reporting it as widely as they did. We all know that if you eat less calories you’ll lose weight.

Well the media gets it wrong both ways. When they demonize “sugar” or “wheat” as the thing that makes people fat and sick. They’re missing the point. If I lock you in a room and feed you 500 calories of sugar per day you will lose weight and starve to death eventually.

Calorie balance is the #1 most important thing. Remember I posted all this to a claim of “food is information calories don’t matter”.

I do, which is why I’m not making any attempt to debate with you. I support your posts against Zeps foolishness (If you’ll note, in my vent on that diet debacle i also referred to the fact that calories matter and everybody knows it). I used that post to vent on the topic.

So 1,000 calories of soda has the same effect on bodyweight as 1,000 calories of broccoli?

broccoli has other components, micronutrients, that will have an affect on general health, and can impact weight of course. If your digestion sucks, your processing of calories will be altered. But that being said, the difference as it relates to bodyweight will be minimal, if that’s literally the only alteration in one’s diet. like, if the person is taking in 1000 calories of sugar along with 1000 more of protein and 500 of fat, I don’t believe swapping the sugar for broccoli will make a substantial impact, maybe not even a noticeable one for many.

I’ll have to disagree with you here, but as for the details I don’t want to derail even further when we all know Zep is materially wrong.

You didn’t say calories don’t matter. You posted an article that says they don’t.

The only reason food type matters for the general public is that it’s easier to over-consume calories of pepperoni pizza than it is Samon and broccoli.

Every fad diet works because it tricks people into eating less calories. Healthier foods tend to be less calorically dense.

If you take a guy eating 3800 cals of the SAD and put him on 3800 cals of organic home-made everything, he will not decrease his weight or improve health markers. Calories are more important than what you’re eating.

Malnutrition almost doesn’t exist in the US. The processed garbage that makes up the SAD is fortified with vitamins to keep murikans alive at least.

Americans are the fattest because they eat the most calories and are largely sedentary. Also because it is culturally ok to be fat in the US (compared to most other nations).

The original premise was healthcare. An obese body is a sick body. Full stop.
