Couple issues with the article. First of all fleeced is not accurate. The US has committed ~$8 billion, that is like $25 a person. I wouldn’t exactly call a $25 expense fleecing. Well worth it if we can put Putin in his place.
The article seems to be Russian propaganda as well. From the article:
Come on. Literal Nazis?
Bro, I can get like 2 meals at chikfila for that.
Also, I could have bought like 2 billion dogecoin when it released with that.
Hands off my $25 to help Ukraine fight Russia. Who the fuck cares let them all burn.
Put Russia in their place? Are they not making record profits?
But, I am sure it is just more Russian propaganda.
I do not give a shit about Ukraine or Russia. I can not understand why we are single handedly supporting this “war”. What are we at now over 50 billion? At least everything is going smoothly in the U.S….wait…
Lot’s of people in the US thought this way about WWII. We only financially supported the Allies until Pearl Harbor. Some were upset even about financial support. They thought it wasn’t their problem.
IMO, you can’t let a powerful country do as they please to other countries if you want global stability. When you get a bully, you fight back. A good person will fight for those that can’t stand up to the bully by themselves.
It sure seems like a big number, but it’s not when you consider the US’s budget.
These type of articles are written to stir people up. Keep in mind, that Elon Musk has made about that amount of money total in a single day. Musk doesn’t have money like the government.
But, that is not why we are helping Ukraine lol.
Ukraine was the playground for politicians to teach their kids the ropes of corruption while also laundering money.
And they are still doing it with our tax dollars. This just gives them an excuse to dump even more money there for their pockets and friend’s pockets that most people will never question.
The Ukraine isn’t even in NATO. Let Russia take them.
Counterpoint - fuck the Russia-China Axis.
And, thank goodness, we stepped in to help the Soviet Union and Stalin. Really took that moral high ground. Also the practical: there’s little doubt that America would have fallen soon had it not joined the Soviet Union. 4,000+ miles just to reach our shores, a larger population, and 2,000+% greater land area would have done nothing to stop the Nazis, who had a bunch of The Science to show their superiority.
Counter counterpoint - fuck the entire rest of the world.
I’d like to watch them become interdependent on each other, then start jockeying for advantage given that they’re both operating zero sum economic philosophies.
How would China rationalize their way out of such great need for energy resources without russian cooperation, and how would russia continue to cooperate once their best customer starts cutting too close to the bone?
Watch the fuckers fuck the other fuckers until they’ve fucked each other into oblivion.
Even our NATO allies?
I’ll be watching with a bowl of popcorn.
I read an interesting article a while back describing Russia as essentially two states - Europe Russia and Asia Russia, divided by the Ural Mountains. There are notable economic and cultural differences between the east and west. And energy production is primarily in the east. The point was the energy-rich east will orient itself towards Beijing over time as China’s economic influence over the region grows. It’ll be interesting to see how Moscow responds if this is how things play out.
The loss of life in Ukraine is tragic, but this whole shitshow has worked out to America’s strategic benefit. Russia is burning through money and materiel at a staggering rate. We’re getting valuable intel about their military capabilities. And we have a pretext for wrecking the Russian economy via sanctions. All without putting our own service members in harm’s way.
Yes.
They’ve rode on our back and money for far too long.
Fuck them too. We don’t need them. They need us.
If Russia invaded Poland and Poland invoked Article 5, would you advocate America just doing nothing?
I wouldn’t characterize the relationship as entirely one-sided. All NATO members did follow us into Afghanistan after 9/11 after all.
Of course we don’t “need” NATO members, but we do have economic interests in Canada and Europe. Stability is important to those interests. And if NATO can deter a bad actor from upsetting the apple cart, then that’s a good thing.
Yes, I’m a huge proponent of isolationism and minding your own business.
We have people here that need money and help that are US citizens. Until they are all taken care of - the rest of the world can eat shit and fend for themselves.
Did we step in to help them, or to keep them from taking all of Germany and ending up in a position to take France and the rest of Western Europe. And given the number of communists in Western Europe at the time, many in the French resistance were communists, the Soviets would have had inside help. We helped Europe to keep ourselves relevant as a world power and, if WW3 broke out, we would fight it over there instead of over here. Europe has simply been a buffer between us and the USSR.
In the long run, we did beat the Soviets.
I’m sorry, but what was the better option? A) take the other side, b) do nothing? This is not a rhetorical question. Taking the moral high ground is taking the side that is on higher ground, not the side that is perfect. Sometimes, there aren’t perfect options.
Stalin vs. Hitler? I’ll take this option.
Do you know anything about history? If the Soviets defeated Germany and turned the entire nation into what we did end up having with East Germany, they then could have continued to take over France and the rest of Western Europe. That would have increased the chances of the Cold War becoming a hot war.
We had to get involved in order to keep the Soviets in check. We didn’t help Stalin; the Germans lost the Eastern Front after Kursk.
And getting back to my first question: the Japanese attacked us at Pearl Harbor which forced us to enter WW2.
I guess not, because I have never heard this:
given as the reason for involvement in WWII.
We got involved because Hitler declared war on the USA after the japanese bombed pearl harbor
