If being so concerned over how much you bench has kept you unhappy with your physical progress (appearance wise), then why would you stikc with it so long… If you’re a powerlifter, then be concerned with numbers. If you’re training for asthetics, then numbers be damned (except as a indicator of weekly progress)

I guess it was the mentality that if I’m really strong I’ll also be really big - but it’s not always that simple in bodybuilding, especially when the target muscle isn’t getting a lot of stimulus as in this case. Also, my chest isn’t all that bad (nothing to be completely ashamed of)…just wanted it bigger and wanted it to stick out more than my front delts LOL.

…then the next minute, I knew things weren’t quite going to be all that easy when my brother handed me one of the DB’s (haven’t got the technique of hoisting these cheap bulky/pointy things up yet)…I nearly fell off the side of the bench! It didn’t really help with the fact that my bench is cheap and wobbly (another investment for me to make).[/quote]
Sit upright on the bench. Rest the dumbells on your thighs (you’ll be holding them in a hammer grip if that helps to visualise it). Then lean back and kick the dumbells up with your legs. The momentum should carry you into the right position.

In theory that sounds all good…but when I progress, I just can’t imagine “flipping” these things around…maybe it’ll be ok with the specially built ones (preset weight) which are not wide and have no long bar poking out the ends - you could hold them closer together and closer to the body (and the grip’s easier).
It’s not theory. I use normal and thick grip olympic dumbell handles, not presets, and it works just fine for me.
