Best Video Game Soundtracks

Dam SSC you really got it with that Diddy Kong one… I remember that so clearly. And I’m glad you mentioned Chrono Trigger, along with Breath of Fire I my 2 favorite games of all time.

And from chrono trigger:
600 A.D. theme

I was waiting for someone to say Tony Hawk Pro Skater. they always had the best music in those games

Since someone said Tony Hawk Pro Skater, I’ll take my second favorite, which was the Twisted Metal games. In particular, #4.

First of all, anyone who even tries to post anything besides original NES game music is wrong. I don’t care how good Starcraft’s music was, NES music beats everything. NES music just put a level of stress into the player that no system can match. Everything is just too complicated now - the simple nature of the graphics combined with superb gameplay allowed the music to play a special role in conveying emotion (as mentioned previously) that it just cannot reach anymore.

Here are my examples of NES music greatness:

Double Dragon I Intro Music - Get Ready to Fight

Double Dragon II Music - Prepare for Insanity

Double Dragon II - Final Stage - The speed player makes it look easy. The music alone will scare you the first time you get here.

SUPER SPIKE VOLLEYBALL - World Cup Match Vs. Mexico - When the music comes on you just feel it.

SUPER SPIKE VOLLEYBALL - World Cup Match Vs. US NAVY - These guys are intimidating as hell. Right before this match is Russia, whose music is sick and can be heard in the part 3 video (above is part 2) near the end.

Tecmo Super Bowl - Nigerian Nightmare Vs The Colts

RBI Baseball - Vince and Ozzie put on a show of speed. This music is all about class, as exemplified by the baseball pre-1990s steroid era.

COBRA TRIANGLE - Just sick all around. If you notice in the first level, there’s no music. That’s because this game was so sick it didn’t need music in the first level. You knew what was coming once you got there. The realness starts at 1:45:

Final Boss.

And now… my all time favorite:

WIZARDS AND WARRIORS 3
Listen to the intro just to get things going. Yeah this game has the potential, but to truly understand - you just have to play it.

Oh shyt, castle time.

Thief level, hard as fuck.

The wizard level music is my all time favorite. No game music beats this. Starts at 0:25.

I know… that VGM just kicks so much ass. Seriously. And here’s a few more I forgot,

Kirby is the best

Check this out if you like old school video game music. Great recordings …

SICKKKKKKKK

If “best” means “most memorable” or “most recognizable,” then without a doubt it’s a toss up between:

Super Mario Bros.
Tetris

Those two theme songs must be the most recognizable given how many generations have played variations of those games (and, eventually, the latest generation must have had the curiosity to keep playing earlier iterations of each game until they reached the original game and heard the original score).

Now, coolest “covered” soundtracks?

Street Fighter

Dig it, motherfuckers: Street Fighter - Guile's Theme - YouTube

I seriously turned off my phone one day and loaded up all the various fighter themes and played them while I laid out in the sun in my backyard. Nostalgic music makes for the best lullabies.

twisted metal 3

In first person shooters I always turn the music off. I don’t need to be hearing a tambourine solo and someone going nuts on a triangle while I’m shooting people.

Metal Gear Solid series!!! MGS4 opening scene music was the great.

Cuz Okami > Zelda

This guy did a show at my school last week (Rutgers) and it was sick.

Thia is one cool thread!

Extreme G (part one was the best imo. Speed, crazy bends and rockets: What more do you need?)

F-ZERO: MUTE CITY (why did no one mention this one?)

And again F-zero X style

GOD OF WAR 2: Zeus theme!!!

unreal tournament had some badass songs.
