It’s really frustrating. It’s too bad, 'cause if they had made it a little more user friendly it probably would be better remembered and possibly remade. It’s a great and unique idea for a game, and I’m sure they could do some sick shit with todays systems.

The Metal Gear series has some of the most epic music in my opinion.
As much as Sonic is a Sega icon, I don’t see much evidence for a huge music following. The same applies to Mario games of Nintendo to an extent. They are tunes that we all recognize but they are almost too basic and ordinary to be appreciated. SMB3 was huge but the level tunes were quite simple and not remixed too much. Out of the SNES, SMBW2 definitely had some more musical depth and some tunes get people pumped.
Donkey Kong Country games had some of the most detailed and noteworthy SNES music aside from the RPG’s. Most people seem to think it peaked at DKC2 and I imagine it would do great in any vote.
I don’t know why people love Mega Man 2 so much. I think the music is level with that of most games while the Wily level theme is very memorable and has birthed many remixes. I think it is, however, beaten by the 1st Wily level theme of MM7 of SNES.
When it comes to PC games, I can’t think of anything as memorable as Doom 1 and 2 and I think a sizable percentage would agree.
Someone posted ocremix.org which is a good site. I would also recommend Overlooked Remix for failed and parody remixes (often with vocals) of vg tunes.

in my opinion Heroes of Might and Magic 3 has some of the best music period. the fact that it’s in a video game is just a bonus. here’s a taste.
here are a few more. this music is so awesome I actually found it all online and downloaded so I didn’t have to play the game to hear it.
My friend is the composer for the Total War games, specifically Empire and Napoleon. Full orchestral scores with an 88 piece orchestra and a 44-piece choir. Next time I might be able to go to one of the recording sessions.
