You guys hit most of the greats already, but here’s the most unheard songs with the greatest solos:
Eddie Van Halen - VH - “Push Comes to Shove”
that is a smoking solo ! you think he did that straight or punched in ?

I read an interview at the time where he indicated that it was one of the few solos he worked out in advance. There ain’t nothing wrong with that, as it has a beginning, middle, and an end — which his solos sometimes lack.

excellent list. can’t forget another tipton/downing classic: “beyond the realms of death”
Yeah, buddy! They did that one last year here in Houston — I couldn’t believe it. I screamed myself hoarse.
I’d seen 'em 5 or so times before and that was never part of the set list.
If you’re talking sheer emotion, Jimmy Page on “Since I’ve Been Loving You”, and David Gilmour on “Marooned” are awesome.
How’s about a …BEST BANJO MUSIC SOLO LIST…???
… GOT BANJO ?
Eddie’s on Beat It is a personal fav (although its not a solo). The first 15 seconds or so when its just Eddie on guitar is bananas!
My brother also. He was a very highly regarded up and coming guitarist in the tri-state area when he was in his teens. His demons got the best of him though and he never got to realize his potential and dreams. He hasnt touched a guitar in 20+ years. Very sad, he was amazing!

The hallmark of a good solo is being able to sing it from memory. Some of these speed guitar and jazz guys are just show-offs.
What jazz guys are you referring to?
Pretty much all of 'em.
Here’s my impression of 99% of jazz solos (any insturment): noodlynoodly noodlynoodly…drum fill…noodly noodly.
David Gilmour/Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb
Gary Rossington, Allen Collins, Stevie Gaines/Lynyrd Skynyrd - Free Bird
Duane Allman - anything he plays; the man was a God when it came to playing the slide guitar. If I could play the guitar, this is who I would want to sound like. Raw and gritty guitar playing that graps at your soul.
Prince - Joy in Repetition (live version)
Billy Gibbons - La Grange
Angus Young - Whole Lotta Rosie (live version)
Any of Metheny’s trio work from the last couple of years
Hendrix - Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)
Neal Morse, song called 12. If you’ve never heard of him your really missing out. He is one of the best musicians in the world, this particualr song is just a solo but it plays the language of my soul…sorry to sound pathetic.
This solo is on his soundtrack called ?
yes, that’s the name of the soundtrack… question mark.
Hell yeah, he was with Spock’s Beard until he got religion. =( Then of course there was Transatlantic with Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater…good stuff. Christian prog though…not so cool.
Eddie VanHalen, Women and Children First album, 8 second speed metal intro to Fools. This is the ONLY solo that ranks above Eruption. After 26 years it still makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up. I took my kids to see VH in 2004 and it was really cool for them see in person what they had grown up listening to. My dad and son play guitar but I guess that gene skipped me!
A Passage to Bangkok by Rush

The solo in free bird by lynard skynard - cannot be beaten. Im rocking out right now!
part 1
part 2
have patience - its worth it.

Thank you mick. That solo is probably the grandaddy of all solos, that which all other solos have been based off of.
Portnoy is amazing, sorry you feel like you do about “religion”
There’s some good stuff listed in this thread. And some not so good, but each to his own.
One of my favorite solos is in the song “No Speak No Slave” by the Black Crowes. It starts off just average good for the Crowes (which is still better than most.) But in the middle, Rich Robinson changes up to a hard, driving chop while Marc Ford turns on the Wah pedal and goes crazy.
It’s not as long as the great Free Bird solo, but man will it get your adrenaline going!
The Eagles Hotel California.
What about Eddie Hazel with Maggot brain 10 minutes of amazing guitar work
Stevie Stevens, “blue highway” last cut on the Billy Idol Rebel Yel Album.
It aint hehendrix but i love it!
George Benson, “Affirmation” and “Breezin”
Nicely done jazz cutz.
