Best Cheat Meal in London

Also, I know full well when a foreigner moans about our food it has something to do with these;

 • Pork pies
 • Fish n Chips
 • Pasties
 • Deep fried Mars Bars (not sure if srs)
 • Sunday roast (how can you hate this?)
 • English fry up

I’ve never actually had a deep fried Mars bar (I’m from the South). But I will aggressively defend the rest! Excellent grub! If a general meat lover has had the items on that list and doesn’t like them then they have clearly just had an exceptionally bad one!

Pork Pies and Fish’n’chips suck. That’s the truth.
Deep fried mars bars was a fad thing in Glasgow. More talked about than found. I have never seen a place that even sold such rubbish.

On the note of deep fried junk, anybody fancy a doughnut? Whereas the mars bar was more a jokey thing, the donut is much more common. All countries have some junk in their food history. British food history is more about game (eating wild animals) where American food history is more cotton candy. Luckily society tends to make improved food choices over time…on this forum anyway.

Sunday Roast and a traditional English Breakfast - These come down to how well it is made. If you expect to get a good Roast for only £3.50 or $5 then don’t expect anything good. For a fair price you can get get these dishes made very well indeed.

I will also state that banoffee pie should be in the top 10 greatest deserts of all time.

I think saying British food is crap is a busted old cliche.

Well, I mean if you like more delicate flavours and all that then yeah, maybe French food would be more to your liking…but an American that likes savoury foods and salty ones and has a sweet tooth will find everythinhg to his liking in the UK too.

I had a deep fried Mars bar and I was fully expecting it to be salty and greasy…but it ended up being like fried ice cream you can get at some Mexican restaurants…the batter was not the same one they use for the fish!

The cool thing that is happening in London (in the land of street food) is that there is basically zero food being sold that would be considered traditional British food. There are a couple fellas (Egg Boss and Brother’s dickins) who are getting really popular doing scotch eggs/pies and cool stuff like deviled kidneys. Most of it is food that is other cultures cuisine and most of it is being done insanely on point. Obviously a pizza in Napoli is going to be better and i am sure the pad thai in Bangkok will be better but they are still making it to incredibly high standards. Mostly brits selling it too.

More so than anything it is just a testament to what an awesome and multicultural city it is here. The guy i mentioned earlier, The Rib Man, is making pulled rib meat sandwiches. Being from the South in the states, ribs are something i hold dear to my heart and i tell you that he can very well go head to head with some of the best i’ve had. Well done food is well done, no matter who makes it or where it is being made, but i think it is safe to say that it is a place’s culture that provides a proper backdrop for such things in the culinary world to flourish.

Oh, and there is a girl from Connecticut selling burgers here, Bleeker Burger. I would commit horrible crimes if that was what she required instead of money for one of her doubles.

You gotta be kidding me. British chocolate tastes like shit.

Give me Belgian and Swiss chocolate all day and I’ll fuck with it.
haha, you gotta be SHITTING me. Those chocolates leave a bitter taste. Dark chocolate like those are different to our stuff.
Black and Greens got some nice dark chocolate, I’ll give you that. However, the rest is shit, pumped with vegetable oil. Tastes like gasoline. Not enough chocolate. And don’t get me started with the Cadburry crap.

Hey, man, I like fish and chips! One of my favourite Friday’s meals, with mushy peas and curry sauce… yummy… when I travel up north, to Huddersfield, I always make sure to stop by some place called the KingFisher. Their fish is fucking delish. Much tastier and fresher than what they serve in Brighton.

America is a big fucking country and the food varies wildly even within cities, let alone states and regions. You can get pretty much any food quality here from shit to world class and pretty much any type of food if you know where to look.

Sydneys in southgate is meant to be good…

How the fuck did I forget mushy peas. I love them too.

Hmm Huddersfield, not far from me. Fish and chips from good restaurants or revered chippies make the dish, too many shitholes just sell it. Probably where Samuel L Jackson got his from in Liverpool.

I dont eat much chocolate, if any these days. I’ve been going years without the stuff and may have a bar now and then but when I was eating it I did like it but now I cannot stand much of it. Boosts are delish tho.

If we’re going on about food, I love Man Vs Food. If I ever go to 'Merica I’ll definitely want to check out some of the places mentioned in the show. Those steaks, burgers, basically any meat dish I want to bury my face in.

Amen, my friend. To sit there and throw that sterotype on the states is to do the exact same thing that many are complaining about being done to England.

I think the important thing to note is that the fast food lifestyle (even though it is still there, just to a lesser degree) is diminishing and people are increasingly becoming more knowledgeable about what is good food. And they are wanting that to be available, which is a big reason why i think this street food boom in London is happening right now. People will pay an extra couple of pounds for an amazing burger from this food truck rather than the McFrankentstein burger from the golden arches down the street.

Yess!!! I love that show. Adam Richman must have one massive stomach. Really don’t know how he does it.

I went to a burger joint in London, around Hoxton Square, called the Red Dog Salon, and I ordered their biggest burger, The Devastator. Couldn’t even finish half of it. I wanted to be Adam Richman and I failed.

Funny how that burger doesn’t look too big in that pic. Doesn’t look as big as the burgers I’ve eaten in the States when they put it in front of you. That’s why I was so confident that I’ll finish it. It does taste lovely though. I love pulled pork.

Holy Crap. I am going here. Immediately.

If you like Indian (dot not feathers) London has pretty much the best curry joints in the world.

BTW, what’s with the avi ADHD?
Yeah I guess I’ve been a little enigmatic with that.

Normally whenever I decide to re-watch a great film, I’ll change the picture to a movie poster of it. Usually not a commercial one, but I try to find an alternative fan-made one that I like a lot more artistically. Basically it’s to signal that if anyone is interested in the poster, or how the film looks, or wants to reminisce about it, they can strike up conversation and I’ll put in a quick review, or scenes I like, blah blah blah etc. Because I like to talk about classic films that I really love, but I try to reserve most movie threads and reviews for first-time views. If I were to include every one of these it would just clog it up too much.

Makes me sad sometimes, because I’ll normally run across one that I really enjoy, but then principle dictates that I have to change it again next time I see another great film from the past. The Dirty Harry one I had is one of those, this Get Carter one might in fact be another one.

Also, if anyone is interested in fan-made posters for a film, I have a whole library of them and the artist’s websites at my disposal. There’s some great ones by a guy named Tyler Stout that I frequently use, most may recognise his art from the box cover of the game “Sleeping Dogs”.

Vlad Rodriguez also holds some of my newer favourites. His are more painted representations than the kind of cell-shaded art mentioned previously.

If anyone asks for a particular film I can try and search for some artists that have created a poster for it. But don’t be taking my gimmick from me now!
