It’s a bummer that they’ve killed off the Ghost in the Shell franchise, esp with Solid State Society being so disapointing imo.

Actually, no they didn’t. They make a remake now and then, and with huge quality improvements.

I’ve been reading that they are making a live-action movie with Steven Spielburg (sp?). They have Ghost in the Shell 2.0 which is just a up dated version with surround sound and clips that are CGI. Not all of it is CGI tho the the transition from cartoon to CGI is pretty dumb in my opinion.

Sure a remake/remastered edition of the same movie - it’s getting a 3D release as well.
Or the series based ‘film’s’ which were just the series summed up in a shorter period.
Doesn’t exactly count towards continuing the story, which was what I was talking about.
Sure there are rumours (that have been circulating ever since the end of 2nd gig) - but until there’s a trailer/teaser…it’s dead.
Great, thanks to this tread, pretty much everyone in college that didn’t know I am a big nerd, now definitly knows. Watching Berserk because of this thread and its awesome. I think I’m going to be quite the recluse for a while…
you have my blessing, berserk is awesome.
I’m really not to impressed with Ghost In The Shell series. It’s pretty boring. All it’s really about is them sovling “crimes”. There’s hardly any action through episodes 1-5 (All I’ve watched thus far). I’m hesitant to watch more to waste 24mins watching them talk and talk and talk while I read and read and read. BLOW SOMEONE’S HEAD OFF!
I grew up with DBZ and various other anime movies since my sister has always been into that stuff (draws anime, very talented). Watched Princess Mononoke, X, Akira, GITS1 & 2 (never seen the series) and a few others that I can’t recall at the moment.
Thanks to this thread I watched the Berserk series a few months ago which was very good, so thanks for that.
Right now I am watching the Ergo Proxy series which is very interesting so far, I don’t think anyone has mentioned it in this thread yet so I thought I’d mention it.
Anime seems to be a good medium for pushing the boundaries of visual story telling, nothing seems to be off limits. I’m glad I was introduced to it early on.

Eh, the second series gets especially bad with all the philosophy crap (though I still sort of liked it I guess)… Seriously, Japanese must have a major hard-on for that stuff… I’m not sure if it’s really as retarded as it seems or if the subs are just bad and stuff gets lost in translation… But man, I swear, they come up with more ridiculous crap than the PWI regulars.
All those drawn-out, unnecessary explanations and musings… Even if they were well done, it’s just too damn much.
I still watched it… But to be honest, after the original movie I think the anime franchise went down the drain… The second one wasn’t bad per se and looked great and all, but it already seemed kind of awkward and convoluted to me…
Btw, anyone watching Roberta’s Blood Trail (new Black Lagoon) ?
Seems a bit more violent/bloody and even somewhat… Ecchi in places I guess? If one can call it that.
i have a netflix acct so i watch a lot of the anime on there…
afro samurai is definitely a must see and its short like 5 eps and a movie (i think) the artist really combines hip hop, blood, and anime really well… if u like bloody samurai anime then this is a must see
shiguriu is really good as well… its short (13 eps) and takes about 4 eps to really get into the story and there’s no ending (there’s an ending in manga form which i read) but its really well done and the voiceovers aren’t too bad… another samurai age type anime… but its more of a drama than fighting… lots of the fight scenes end in one swing of the sword…
watching soul eater right now… its decently done… its a naruto type but more upbeat not as dramatic as naruto… basically u follow a soul hunter as she progresses through the storyline…
samurai 7 was good… voiceover was crappy but liveable… its an anime take on the movie and the american western the magnificent 7… basically a village is being pillaged by raiders and they need help so they look for samurai to help them… i guess this would be like a mix of modern tech and ancient times… u’ll understand when u see it…
i’ve also watched golgo 13 (sniper anime) which was pretty good and short and gunslinger gurl which was also good…

The Boondocks is pretty great at its high points. I don’t remember another animated show that gave me such strong laughs.[/quote]
South Park.

I like the philosophical debates and socio-political explanations. The whole Ghost in the Shell franchise has always been an intelligent and challenging bit of science fiction. Most anime these days are chock full of inane conversations filled with retardedly long pauses for little apparent reason, drawn out explanations for incredibly simple concepts, and 60 second flash backs to events that occurred in that very episode. The GITS series is very much a needed breath of fresh air.

I watched ERGO PROXY and thought it was ok. The art work is pretty much standard Anime design, but the monsters are pretty damn cool. Overall I liked the concept, but the story seems to wander too far. The ending was like having a lingerie model host a Jenny Craig convention. All you want to do is look at the hot chick in her underwear, but all these fat bitches keep getting in the way. ERGO PROXY could have been epic, but came out kind of average.

Granted, compared to a lot of other stuff out there, GITS does these things much better.
The DragonBall effect sure is widespread…

I think GITS has some strong character development as well - which keeps things interesting (Togusa and Batou in particular) It certainly isn’t for everyone, especially SAC - but once you’re used to the pace, dialogue etc. it becomes pretty enjoyable.
My all-time favorite is Dragon Half. Completely ridiculous, sadly only a couple of episodes were made. Also The Enemy’s The Pirates, the baseball episode might be the greatest thing I’ve ever watched and I’ve never liked baseball.
I also like K-On cause I play in a band with some girls and it reminds me a lot of them. Here’s my band playing one of the endings from that last weekend:
