Benanything's Training Log

Pretty much… I’d say I basically pussied out when I started to feel the grind.

One easy thing I’ve learned is that, with the clean, you don’t want any contact with the bar on the first pull, whereas with the deadlift you want contact the moment you initiate the rep.

When you say uncomfortable, what exactly do you mean? It just doesn’t feel right, or the load is placed somewhere that is uncomfortable and weird?

I just feel stronger in what’s supposedly a less optimal position. There is no contact with the bar when I initiate the lift.

Press
20kgs x10
30kgs x10
40kgs x2, tweaked my left shoulder in some way on my second rep
40kgs x10, I think I might’ve been pressing too much before this, hence tweaking my shoulder
50kgs x4, left shoulder feeling vulnerable so cut it short

Push Ups
superset
Machine Rows
3 sets of 20

Squats
70kgs x3
100kgs x3
120kgs x1

Ab Wheel (knees on ground)
10, this were hard as shit, gonna incorporate them as much as I can

I’m thinking of going off the rails for a bit. I’ve done 7 cycles of 5/3/1 and it honestly feels like I’m just spinning my wheels for the most part. I mean, I’d like to think, at the very least, I understand the importance of progression. Gonna go a month or two without a fixed program and see how things go. That being said though, I’m a fairly structured person so I doubt my training will see overly random. There’s probably a pattern somewhere in there.

Starting from the 29/10/2017, I think I’ll start recording down everything I do, not just the gym sessions.

at 6:00AM-ish
stretched a bit
slow 1km jog
20 push up
10 pull ups

entered gym at 2:30PM

Seated Dumbbell Press
10kgs x10
15kgs x10
20kgs x3x10

Stiff Leg Deadlift
60kgs x5
70kgs x4x8

It was at this moment I realised how much I hated working out with other people. Wanted to take 45 second rest between sets. Guy who was sharing with me, took a minute just to set up at the bar to do his rows.

Leg Curl
70lbs x10
100lbs x3x10

Leg Extensions
50lbs x10
80lbs x3x10

Cleaned 60kgs twice, wanted to just front squat it from the ground but nope. The bar basically doesn’t spin so all the momentum was just going straight to my wrist. Gotta wait and take it out from the rack.

Wait was too long, didn’t front squat in the end.

at 8:30PM
slow 1km jog
push ups x3x15
5 pull ups

Snatch
warmed up a bunch
did 30kgs for a few singles to get a feel for things
Did not feel good, overhead position is just not there, everything isn’t there. Well no shit, haven’t really done the Olympic lifts in months.
did a bunch more 30kgs singles
40kgs singles
50kgs singles
60kgs, failed once, got it once, looked ugly as fuck

So uh… That’s all I did the whole day, just worked on my snatch the entire day. Gonna get back to doing some Olympic lifts.

Looked through some older footage and realised the last time I did the Olympic lifts frequently-ish was 10-ish months ago…

@Destrength gonna need your help buddy. Just point out whatever mistakes you can see, here are some of the last few reps I did .

I know my balance is shit. Positioning/timing is off. I still have the whole bunny hop issue going on. Will occasionally jump forward. All in all, my snatch is garbage. Eh, what’s new? Haha basically, everything sucked and now it’s that plus 10 months of not doing it, so extra suck.

Gonna lose that strip of hair on my shins again.

First thing that pops out is that you aren’t over the bar/staying over the bar. Also you aren’t supposed to be scraping the ever living fuck out of your shins, they shouldn’t even be in contact aside from kissing at the start. Bar should either make slight contact at hips, or slight contact throughout thighs if you think you are built/move like Toshinki/Lu Xiajoun/Tian Tao, not all asian lifters do the slight thigh contact and instead do a traditional Russian style pull like Liu Hao (contact at one point and super discrete see-saw style pulling).

Mid foot more for first pull, heel more for second pull, get off the fronts of your feet after the bar is broken off the floor. I’d consider super low hangs and no feet lifts if I were you. No feet forces balance you will be looping (and you will feel and see looping) or missing weight, and hangs are really good with feeling how you are supposed to be balanced, I’d go with snatch+ hang snatch to like 3 inches off the floor for hang work.

Fix your first pull and your balance throughout the lift, and the rest will at the very least improve a good bit.

edit: make sense of the grammar and stuff as you can. I just got out of an exam, and I had little sleep last night because of noisy dorm neighbors.

Thanks for the advice. Will see what I can do about it. I’ve pretty much accepted the fact that I’ll never be decent by (what is my perception of) weightlifting standards. I guess the next best thing would be to be decent by crossfit standards(the lift looks close enough to the actual thing in spite of all the minor errors everywhere), if that makes sense haha.

If you don’t start as a small child chances are your technique will never be perfect like Apti who has like a 0 second delay between second and third pulls. Just have to get stronger, and fix/adapt your technique as you go on.

That and you know, not being able to do it as often and as frequent as you’d like. That’s a huge bummer. It ain’t the 50s/60s anymore haha. You can’t just muscle your way into shit.

The good ol days??? It’s extra entertaining considering the current world record for the Snatch is 217kgs.

Although training less frequently can work. Lile Kendrick Farris only trains five (six?) times a week with the LSUS program. He’s a B section, but he’s made it to 3 Olympics. If he got his jerking and snatching game together he could’ve/could be (depends if Damron or Burns eats Kendrick’s soul/Cummings is still in/Ian or Wes gets a spot, depends on how the US gains spots) on the podium.

I don’t even follow weightlifting much now to be honest. Last I recall, a bunch of the more impressive countries were banned. Russia, China and not to mention… They banned Ilya Ilyin damnit.

I mean, not only can he break dance, I’m pretty sure he was on route to getting a 250kgs clean and jerk on the platform.

rIt’s almost as though steroids will be part of a strength sport. It’s only a temp ban anyways, aside from for Ilya. Biggest loss was the IOC is using this as an excuse to possibly kill the sport despite it hitting the highest popularity in the longest time, and there being retarded non-sporting activities that are even less popular like speed walking and equestrian/archery. They want to do shit like add another version of basketball, and another version of volleyball (indoor and outdoor wasn’t enough apparently) and esports
