You’re me like six years ago. One moment you are cutting back from running because it’s hurting you, next moment you’re focusing on gaining muscle and strength and doing sprints because running never really seemed to carry over to anything, next moment you’ll realize you haven’t done any cardio in like five months and it’ll be another few months until you actually start doing cardio again. It’s a very dark path filled with lots of heavy breathing and weight gain (not really).

In all seriousness, have you tried running crossfit benchmarks for cardio? Like not the really retarded ones, but the reasonable cardio ones like 5 push ups, 10 pull ups, and 15 pistols for as many rounds as possible during like 20-30 minutes (I like to limit it to less time and scale up to harder versions/adding weight since I don’t really need to be doing any cardio longer than 10-15 minutes). Obviously you have to be very disciplined, not force bad reps, etc when you are doing stuff like that because it’s light enough that you can force bad reps in a fatigued state and hurt yourself. I personally like running them since it lets me accumulate ‘free’ (i.e I don’t seem to get as much muscle tearing or joint stress) volume while building up my overall endurance.

I’m running specifically to prepare myself for the army haha. No other way to get (significantly) better at running other than to run.

Ben-Anything-military-man? Wouldn’t have thought you were the type, is it mandatory service in your country?

We do have mandatory conscription in Singapore but I’m planning on signing up for a 5 year contract. I’m actually halfway through the interviews. Why don’t I seem like the type haha?

You own at least 1 more pair of neon compression pants than expected of a soldier.

Kidding. The real reason is because you mentioned engineering and such in the log (forgot what kind), and I figured you would prefer a nice cushy civilian job. Also aside from becoming an officer or some weird specialty unit, the military/navy/airforce is kind of where the less economically fortunate go to (in the US) so that they have a decent pension, benefits, and the GI bill. Considering you do kayaking/weightlifting/strongman, (more expensive and niche areas of fitness) and received an education in engineering I would expect you to be at least middle class which is typically a less common group to enter the military.

Not that there’s anything wrong with being in the military. My grandfather was in the pacific theater, and I have at least one extended family one in every conflict since then aside from our dickery in the middle east. I think it’s either Iraq or Afghanistan that I had a cousin serve as a marine. By his age it would’ve been time for mid-afghanistan or early Iraq.

That’s a fair assessment haha.

I did mention engineering, I have a Diploma in Aeronautical Engineering and uh… I did beyond badly, never did enjoy, was never good at it either.

As for the whole officer/weird specialty unit thing. I really wanted to be an officer for as long as I can remember. Did a bit more reading/soul searching etc and realized, I didn’t want to be an officer for the right reasons. I wanted it for the prestige and “honor”. That and I’m not academically strong enough to do well in the officer corp. Furthermore, I’ve spoken to tons of people in the military and not once have I heard anything good bout an officer. Hell, there’s is basically a whole caste system among officers in my country. As a quick insight into the situation. There are basically a few tiers of officers.

There are the…
Farmers, guys who pretty much work their asses off with little gains coming their way.
Low level scholars, guys who’re basically the middle class, some decent guys, some shit guys.
High level scholars, for the most part, this guys are so busy being promoted that they don’t go for courses and shit. Their uniforms generally have extremely little badges. Think of a guy at age 30 being a colonel, now that’s bullshit.

As for the enlisted/NCOs, yeah… They’re pretty much known as the “people who can’t get a job in the real world”.

As for what, I plan to do… The current plan would be to pass through my interviews and basically get into our equivalent of airborne and work towards getting into SF. I’m applying to be an enlisted/NCO because well, I don’t want to spend more time doing paperwork than I have to and I’d much rather avoid the shit ton of office politics among them overpaid babies.

As for the more expensive/niche areas of fitness haha, they aren’t really that bad. Considering everything is literally affiliated with my school, they’re essentially free.

Regarding my (family’s) socioeconomic status, I would say that we’re currently middle class, yes. Wasn’t always the case though, spent a good few years in debt and such and I would say that those years had quite a huge impact on me. Nothing like being threatened to be sued by your relatives to turn you all cynical.

I realize I’ve been rambling and such but as a end all statement. I’ve always wanted to be a soldier. Now more so than ever, pretty much most of my peers are entering the armed forces (as required by conscription) right now. All I hear, day after day, is how it’s a waste of time and they could be doing something better with their lives/etc. Hearing shit like this, annoys the living hell out of me. If anything, it makes me want to do my part even more. I’ve always had the mentality of “If I won’t do it, who will?”" instilled into me. Right now, it’s just in the forefront of most of my thoughts.

That and you know, I do want to have a job where I get to kick down doors, shoot guns and blow up shit for a living.

I would agree with this, save for a few exceptions.

As for those who act all tough proclaiming how much an officer sucks to their peers, you should see the way some of them turn into submissive little bitches in the presence of high ranking officers. It’s usually quite amusing especially when they’re in their 40s and going through the motions just waiting to collect their pensions so they can finally get a job driving a cab.

Do understand that you may be getting opinions from the equivalent of Starting Strength noobs. And this affects your life, not just picking up a barbell.

Go become a bloody commissioned officer. Office politics and stuff exist everywhere. Only entitled children can’t handle it.

TO WESTERNERS:

THE MILITARIES AND CIVIL SERVICE IN HIS COUNTRY AND ASIA ARE NOT THE SAME AS THOSE IN YOUR COUNTRIES SO DON’T GET PISSED OFF WHEN YOU READ THIS.

I would like to think that getting advice from CWOs, SWOs and MWOs from the enlisted side and LTC/COLs from the officer side would be considered reasonable. I know better than to listen to the lower ranking NCOs and especially the conscripts.

I’m also considering the difference in job scopes and duties of the 2 different roles.

On a side note, I’ve actually read through some of your older posts. Joining the military in another country for citizenship and money for higher education… That and you know, the whole reservist yearly PT test thing. Sounds like Singapore to me.

I already said I’m not going to discuss my location. Please do me a favour and don’t ask me again.

Anyway, now you have a counter opinion from someone who would probably be at least a LTC if he had stayed in the army and is currently an employer in the private sector.

Have you considered joining the police force?

*I understand you may have friends or family in the military and it is really not my intention to disparage them although this was inevitable, but rather to give you a conflicting opinion as food for thought. So please understand that this is not personal.

Alright, not going to bring it up ever again. I’ve thought about joining the police force and I can’t say it interests me one bit.

This popped up in my recommendations and I gotta say, it’s hilarious haha. That being said though, I’ve no hate for powerlifting, duh…

It’s 4AM right but heck, might as well update it. Body clock has been awfully messed up as of late due to… Sporadic habits(?). Gonna have to hard reset it, stay awake till 10pm and head to sleep then. Still going to have to lift later today.

Run
Gonna start a new thing, for this 3 weeks, I’m going to run(and walk) around the compound near my place. That’s roughly 3km to 3.2km. Timing today was 26:33:16, ran(and walked a bunch) at 3am-ish.. On the plus side, I got my first pair of running shoes and used them for the first time today. They were AMAZING. Never knew what I’ve been missing out on.

Needs secret Ilya Ilyin squat footage. Ilya “I can squat so have that it destroys my body, so let me casually do 3X bodyweight front squats instead” Ilyin. Or that one chinese 94 that has a 400+KG squat.

I remember there was this comment by Clarence Kennedy on his video which has since been deleted…

He was asked why did he pause his back squat. He responded with something along the lines of, paused back squats are light and easier for me to recover from. Says the guy who squats 300kgs at a bodyweight of 103kgs, having deadlifted 330kgs in the same day.
