Beginner's Handgun for Home Protection?

I have an excellent home alarm system that is on every night (on interior-bypass) or when we’re not home. I have the chime that sounds when any window or door is opened when the alarm is off, which some asswipe of a guest recently pissed and moaned about. But it’s a good heads-up to know that somone has come home or a window had been opened.

And the sirens are LOUD. There’s no missing that going off. I have 2 exterior and one interior siren right in the middle of the house. The alarm company calls within 10 seconds if we trip it by accident. This buys me some time to get a firearm in my hand. My vault is in my bedroom and easy to access in seconds. The Mossberg Persuader 12-gauge is always ready to go and the first thing I would grab.

I really would not use it unless someone was coming up the stairs. My kids (over age 21) know to stay in their bedrooms and hit the deck until I say to come out. I had this habit of keeping a loaded .38 SW revolver between the matteress and box spring, but cut that out when my kids came along. Fortunately I have never had to put a gun in my hand for any situation, except in dry-run scenarios which everyone in the house is familiar with.

I’m out on the Island so almost anyone has a shotgun at home and there’s zero paperwork involved. Handgun permits for premise-dwelling are fairly easy, but you have to go through the whole process, which is through the local PD or Sheriff.

My ex-fiancee carried a .25 Colt, silver with the pearl grips. That was a ladies gun. She carried it in her pocketbook and a spare clip in her bra.

She’s out shopping with my sister one time and my sister sees the pistol in her pocketbook and asks her if it was a cigarette lighter. The answer was, not unless you want to blow someone’s brains out in the process.

You’d have a bit of a task getting that little bullet into the brains, let alone blowing any of the brains out. The .25 has been known to be deflected by teeth and foreheads. About the only sure way of using any handgun with a “2” in the first digit of its caliber designation is by ramming the muzzle in the assailant’s eye socket and squeezing the trigger as necessary. Brains will be perforated, if not necessarily blown out.
