Beer Thread

Steely, you mentioned DogFish Head earlier. Here’s a shot of the Red and White Renee and I are enjoying right now. It’s a big, Belgian style wit brewed with coriander & orange peel with pinot noir juice concentrate added, with 11% of the batch aged in pinot noir barrels and 89% aged on oak barrel staves.

I think I like this better than the Black and Blue we drank the other night…further back in this thread…
I’m envious so many Americans have such great access to beers like that. In Canada you can only get the DFH 60 mins, and even that is hard to find!
You know, for some reason we don’t get the 60 Minute in SC…but we get the 90 Minute. I actually prefer the 60 and am looking forward to the day it is distributed here.

Here ya go, Steely. Just popped the cork on this one…a local beer for you.

Oh, yeah— very familiar with Allagash. Good stuff and served in some of the restaurants around the area.

I’ve not had the Four, though.

This > any other gas station beer.

I have to disagree with the grade that B/A gives Geary’s P/A. He says nice things and gives it a ‘B’. This is a damn good beer and has heavy rotation in my fridge. Plus it’s got a goddammed LOBSTER on the label!

Same grade for the Imperial IPA, too but less verbage.

I mean, I’m not a professional beer connoisseur, but I know what I like (and hate)!

And here’s a plug for our local brew pub, just a few minutes from me-- “The Liberal Cup Public House”.

Good reviews from B/A!

I love Beck’s Dark. All the Shiners especially the Hefeweizen and the Kona Pipeline Porter.

We bathe in Bud Light and Corona.

Damn I’m thirsty!

Waterloo Dark is king in my books. Although ever since I’ve seen the movie Beer Wars I’ve wanted to try some Dogfish Head. Do they export to Ontario?

This shit is actually a great chilling out with your friends beer.

Just cracked open this Dubbel…damn smooth.

Allagash Dubbel boasts a dark mahogany color with ruby hues and a complex malty taste. The finish is dry with subtle hints of chocolate and nuts.

Guinness is always a good beer imo.

But if you’re looking for something not as mainstream…

New Holland’s Dragon’s Milk is great (and the name is pretty awesome, too). The aroma is oaky with hints of vanilla, the color is a beautiful black, and the taste has notes of chocolate, vanilla, dark fruits, and best of all, bourbon. If you like stronger drinks, you’ll love this beer.

There’s also several espresso beers that I like a lot (I’m a coffee addict I admit), one of them being Hitachino Nest Espresso Stout, a Japanese craft beer (yes, I know…Japanese beer…wtf). Bold tastes of chocolate and coffee of course. It’s very delicious as a dessert beer.

If you ever find it where you are, try Peche Mortel by Dieu de Ciel, a microbrewery in Quebec. Easily the best coffee beer in the world IMO…

I know this is a beer thread but gotta give credit to a local product you gotta try, Firefly Vodka. It goes down as smooth as a good beer after a hot South Carolina Day.

Sweet! Thanks for the suggestion!

Agreed, it’s crap, but who eat or drink crap now and then? Back porch, good friends , and some good tunes and we’re good to go. I don’t always want to think about my beer or take it to seriously.

it’s like Doritos, I like them, but they’re not home made from scratch pastries or whatever.

One of my most favorite espresso stouts I’ve had recently was Terrapin’s Depth Charge…

Haake Beck Kraeusen would be my all time favorite.

It’s an interesting hybrid between pilsner and hefeweizen in that it contains very young, rich yeast but is otherwise brewed like a pils, making it both really tasty and refreshing.

Interesting. I have tried both recently and for me, the 90 minute is far superior. Some others that I have really enjoyed lately:

Breckenridge 471 IPA
Hop Stoopid (3.99 for a bomber, deal of the century)
Stone Ruination

Edit: I live in Texas, and I hate Shiner Bock. Tastes like watered down carmel. Most boring attempt at an interesting beer I have ever tried.

Thanks, and love the picture. Have you tried Siberian Night by Thirsty Dog? I thought that was a pretty solid coffee stout, too.

Funny you should mention that…Thirsty Dog just expanded distribution to the SC market last month. I was out of town for the kick off at Charleston Beer Exchange…but here was the email announcement.

"We are using tomorrow’s Rare Beer Tuesday time slot to celebrate the addition of a new brewery to the Charleston beer world! Thirsty Dog Brewing Company out of Akron, Ohio is now available in bottles (see full lineup below) and we will be tapping a keg of their highly acclaimed Siberian Night Imperial Stout for growler fills starting at 5pm! This is the first time this beer has been available in the area and is the only keg around, so don’t miss out!

Thirsty Dog Whippet Wheat Hefeweizen
Thirsty Dog Hoppus Maximus Amber Ale
Thirsty Dog Labrador Lager
Thirsty Dog Old Leghumper Porter
Thirsty Dog Twisted Kilt Scottish-style Ale
Thirsty Dog Siberian Night Imperial Stout"

I’ll pick up a bottle next time I come across it and let you know what I think…I heard good things about it from that kick off keg.
