Beef Jerky

Ok, dumb question. You ready?

Everyone seems to have their protein bars right?
Why not just eat a beef bar? I mean beef jerky. Its meat, something we all love to eat. It doesn’t have much extra crap in it either, unlike some protein bars. Has creatine too. Or maybe my heads up my ass. I guess I just happen to like jerky.

I agree, jerky and nuts is a great portable p+f but I will use grow bars for a portable p+c

Best food for road trips… ever.

Amen. Jerky rules. MBE (God rest his forum identity) wrote an excellent Atomic Dog Pound about this very topic.

Jerky is fine, - pair it up with some nuts and you have protein+good fats.

Here, here for jerky!

Beef jerky has saved me from starvation on many a trip and work day. You can be sure we’ll be packing plenty for the trip next weekend!

What is it about hiking kyaking or snowboarding that makes you crave the jerky? Sodium/electrolite loss?

discuss…

Brad

Beef Jerky is too chewy and has too much sodium…gives me a stomach ache.

everyone knows that the more processed something is and the flashy-er the packaging is the better it is for you! And plus supplement companies cant make money out of jerky… come on!

Expensive!

That’s my prob. Salt I can deal with; $6 for 4 ounces, I can’t.

Anybody make there own jerky?
If so, what recipes, does anyone make anything other than beef jerky.
I was thinking about trying to make some turkey jerky, but I’m afraid that if I dont do it right I’ll poison the shit out of myself.

Walmart brand- $5.74 for 8 ounces. Gotta check out Sam’s club - it’s probably cheaper there.

The quality isn’t the best I’ve ever had, but the price is well worth buying it.

That’s still $11 a pound. I’d much rather buy steak. Yum.

Jerky - I’d die without it. I make my own with either top or bottom round (1.99/lb and lean). I buy the cure from a friend and haven’t a clue what’s in it (he owns a jerky shop and while he won’t tell me what’s in it, he swears it’s not full of perservatives/sulfates/nitrates/etc). As for flavorings, I may mix a marinade of chili pequin/teriyaki sauce, or lemon juice/fresh cracked black pepper/fresh minced garlic, or soy sauce/fresh grated ginger.

Never bothered to weigh the final product so I don’t know what the jerky’s price per pound is. I figure if it’s good for me, keeps me away from crap food, and provides some change from the typical bar & shake routine - it’s well worth it.

YUM

How about taking free range, unadulterated buffalo and making jerky out of it? That and some mixed nuts (sans peanuts) and you’d have a perfect snack.

actually has anyone tried bouravous (sic) a south african type jerky, absolutely awesome, not as chewy as jerky, and totally addictive
The jappies make the best meat products…mmmmmm dead animals…

sorry i meant biltong (sic again), wrong meat. Dumb Maori.

There isn’t too much sodium if you make it yourself!!!

My recipe changes with every batch. The basic maranade is soy sauce or teraki and water and liquid smoke 2:1:1 then add spices to taste, another 1 part brown sugar or molasses is good too. I like garlic and cajun seasoning, habaneros from my garden make it deadly!! (I only made that mistake ONCE!) Soak for a few days…making sure to stir it. If you don’t stir the meat will absorb the flavor unevenly.

If you like it with a kick - before you put it in the dehydrator sprinkle some chili powder on it.

Try your hardest to not eat half of it as you remove it from the dehydrator.

I get sandwich steaks at BJ’s wholesale for about $2.50 a pound, then I get nice big slabs of jerky. If you go to a small butcher and give them a day’s notice you can get bottom round sliced nice and thin. My butcher freezes it overnight and then cuts it frozen so it is even.

RS, lots of people make jerky from elk, buffalo and other free range sources. Nothing wrong with it and in fact, the taste is phenomenal.

As for everyone else, jerky can have an awful lot of MSG and other ingredients that might not make it a good choice. Check ingredients carefully. A lot of the cheaper brands really put a lot of garbage in their product, but then again, so do some of the pricier ones. Sure you get some healthy red meat, but you don’t need the extras they put in and some people even get sick from them.

You guys ever try wild bills?
