Becoming Canis dirus - SvenG's Training Log

All of that, friends, was raw and unfiltered. Please forgive the indulgence.

I will make a plan.

I will get back on the training train.

I will not be derailed.

I cannot be stopped.

You showed up for your dad.
You showed up for your son.
Nothing to be sick about, you fulfilled your main duties as a son, father and man.

No doubts on that.

I hope your father get’s better and all is well.

Dude, you take the time you need to take. Sounds like things are headed in the right direction at least. I really hope that’s the case anyway.

I’m so sorry to hear what’s happened.

Glad to hear your father’s condition seems to be improving! From what you described, He seems like a tough cookie.

Here for you mate. Glad to see you share those raw thoughts and know you will execute the plan. A few days for more important things that getting pumped is noting in the overall scheme of things.

I’ll add my voice to everyone else’s and say that you did what you needed to do and you have nothing to beat yourself up about for that. No-one could have asked more of you.

Take the time you need and when you’re ready, you’ll blow all of us out of the water with your focus and dedication anyway!

Family comes first mate, sneak in a little light conditioning movement to hopefully get your mind off things. We’re all here for you.

Believe it or not, your training regimen, which is as much mental as physical, will serve you well during this time. The barbell will still be there when you get back to it, so don’t worry about that.

Workout: Deadlift WM, 1045-1100 (15 minutes)

Deadlift - 285 - 21 (rep PR)

First, thank you to all who commented on my last few posts or let me know you’re there with a ‘Like’.

I was leary of the “old SvenG” in those posts, but you know what I’ve got that he didn’t: all of you!

I sincerely appreciate the support. We all know family comes first, and the affirmations voiced here really mean a lot to me.

My dad continues to progress and he will likely be discharged tomorrow with some additional medications that should make the COPD a bit more manageable.

I won’t say I’m back, because I never really left. But here’s the deadlift Widowmaker that I had originally planned for last Saturday:

That may well be it for the day. But I got up, I got moving, I set a PR. And it was easy—there were more solid reps in there for sure.

So what’s plan for the rest of the week? Hah! There is no plan. Or maybe, “Chaos is the plan!” Right this minute, I don’t actually know. But that’s good enough for now.

Happy 4th, everyone!

Workout: Conditioning + BB curls, 1150-1200 + 1400-1410 (15 + 10 minutes)

Grace WOD - 115 lbs
Time: 4:57

BB curls - 126

Just less than 5:00 is nothing to write home about, but that’s a ball-buster. Tried 135 lbs, got 1 rep (which is an improvement over the last time I tried 135!), but quickly realized it wasn’t happening for 30, no matter how long I took…

Anyway, I got up, I got moving, I tried something new, I did some work—there is no plan!

Edit: FWIW, the WOD was fasted.

Edit 2: Knocked out last Saturday’s BB curls. I don’t intend to payback, or even just make up, the work I missed at the end of last week and the beginning of this week, and I’m clearly not running this week’s deload using JW’s 7th Week Protocol—all of which is a major departure from my obsessive tendencies—but I did want that deadlift WM for the PR and these curls (to keep the momentum going). So there you go. Next time: 127 reps for a BB curl PR!

Workout: Bench & pull-ups, 0925-1000 (35 minutes)

Volkwagen WOD - 21-15-9, for time
a) Bench - 205 - 17+3+1, 9+3+3, 8+1
b) Pull-ups (strict) - BW - 11+3+3+2+2, 9+6, 6+3
Time: 14:47

Man, oh man! THAT was humbling.

The WOD is written with bench at bodyweight and (I’m assuming) CrossFit-style pull-ups. I still haven’t weighed myself (it’s been well over a year now!), but I’d better not be more than 205—and hopefully about 10-15 lbs. less (at least)—but 205 made the plate-math easy. I also did my pull-ups strict, FWIW.

I did this fasted. Started with a quick warm-up (high knees, mobility, etc.) then 135x8, 185x8, and some pull-ups to see how my shoulder was feeling—a little tight, a little sore, but no worse than usual.

Start the timer and go. Tried to keep the rest periods within each move’s rest-pause to a strict 15 seconds, but that fell apart somewhere in round 2. The very last pull-up was hard, hard, HARD, but that’s probably because it was the very last pull-up, haha.

I was really sucking wind throughout, but I’m pleased with the effort. It was a good challenge, and I may have to try it again even after I’m back on regular programming.

Not sure what else the day holds, if anything, so we’re just gonna play it by ear!

Thanks, mi amigo! But…

I’m not sure I could even pick that up, let alone get it over my head, and then repeat 30 times!

That thing is The Green Monster, haha!

Workout: Conditioning, 1310-1345 (35 minutes)

Pwn’s The Last Castle - AMRAP, 20 minutes
a) Farmer’s walk - 25 yards - 2x87 lbs
b) 6 alternating DB snatches - L/R - 40 lbs
c) Farmer’s walk - 25 yards - 2x87 lbs
d) 10 KB swings - 28 kg
Rounds: 8; Time: 22:35

Fasted.

I confess being small and weak is SO much easier than trying to get big and strong.

I confess I love it when my weaker self tries to rear its ugly head—it makes for nice target practice!

This work was fasted. And hard. But the time wasn’t too bad today, considering I’m just doing the bare minimum this week.

Oh, and this: I’ve not been taking creatine, fish oil, or vitamin D this week, and I’ve been feeling flat, sore, and tired—despite doing the bare minimum. Sometimes I wonder if those things really help, so my lax attitude toward that stuff this week is a nice reality check: those things do make a difference.
