Barbell Bench Weights vs. Dumbbells

What should be the ratio?
Say someone is benching 2X with barbell, what should be his dumbbell benching weight?

Impossible to determine.

Well, I wasn’t trying to say there’s a fixed ratio.
Just wanted to know what one should aim for…

maybe you should just concern yourself with trying too lift more on both for more reps.

there is a search function for a reason, fuck off with these bullshit questions

dividing your barbell bench by 3 is usually a good starting point.

dunno, i barbell waaaay more than i dumbell on the bench.

im pretty similiar. Reckon if i didnt have to clean the dumbells up i could more on them.

i hate these search function heroes. did you actually search the question? it had been asked once. and it is not even that bad of a question, so perhaps you might want to fuck off.

anyway, the difference between how much you can chest press with the barbell vs. dumbbells is usually dependent upon the strength of your shoulder stabilizers. there is no rule of thumb type formula i’m aware of, but suffice it to say most can barbell bench press considerably more than they can with dumbbells.

i almost exclusively use dumbbells now due to some shoulder issues in the past, due in large part to focusing too much on barbell bench pressing. and i have made my best gains since switching to db’s and think they are better from a strength standpoint anyway. combination of incline db press, weighted push-ups (vest + plates), weighted dips, and maybe a fluff exercise like the cable fly has given me great chest development.

Once I read (don’t remember where…) that your DB press should be 80% of your BB press (either bench or shoulder press): a 200 lb BB press should be a 160 lb DB (2 dumbells of 80 lb). A weaker ratio could be a sign of weak scapular stabilizator/rotator cuff. Sorry for the lack of reference.

Well in my opinion i prefer much more barbel bench press.Firstly dumbbells add a stabilization challenge & let you work both sides equally in case of muscle imbalances. This makes dumbbells great for assistance exercises, but not for main exercises.

Also,we all now how important is progressive loading and with DBs the progression is not always possible…
Of course with an other point of view both are good especially for mass building and can really work,so its up to you my man.

This is true if the lifter is conciously moving each dumbell the same way. Other wise, it can create imbalances as well (let’s say… one hand is turned slightly different than the other… etc).

where did you get that number?

Last time I checked good manners didn’t cost anyone any money. You should try some. =\

Thanks. I think that’s my current ratio.

I suck at DB presses and never do flat db presses, just incline and shoulder.

incline bb
225x10

incline db
90’sx10

Oh no… not this thread again…

lol…

I don’t know and don’t really care. I’m not a fan of the barbell bench press (GASP!!) If I do its mainly for the decline BB bench press. I haven’t found a solid equation to determine that number.

This sounds about right!

I have a feeling I can push a little higher on the DBs, if I could get them up though.
