Banning the 'R Word'

I’ve got a funny story…

I was chatting too this girl I had hooked up with once on msn chat, anyway my parents were away for the night and I had too pick my sister up from one of her friends houses after a concert. Being angry at the fact it was now 1130 and no response as to when I needed too pick her up.

I asked this girl if she had a younger sister, she replied yes

I goto her is it me but are all little sisters retarded?

I guess you can pick the answer…it didn’t go down well…

for those interested I picked my sister up at 1.30 and fucked the girl in the story two weeks later…

People are getting riled up by the use of the word “retarded”?

That is, quite frankly, retarded.

I’m far more concerned about how liberally people of my generation are using the word “raped” – which is what I thought the “R-word” would be when I clicked on this thread.

“I got totally raped by that exam.”

“Dude my boss totally raped me with shifts for the next two weeks.”

It’s not funny. It’s not cool. It just makes the person saying it sound retarded.

Damn, foiled again…

F’rils, though, it’s people like your professor who fuck it up for everyone. I learned that being an ass hole and beating people senseless until they come around to my side just doesn’t work when I was 14 years old. You’d think these people that are 30+ years old would’ve figured it out by now.

I mean, ass hole greenies, anti-r-word crusaders, and smug “Don’t say gay” commercials just make me want to dump gay, retarded oil down a drain. Strange thing is that I’m completely conscious to the fact that they have a good idea, but I’m going to do the exact opposite because they were complete dicks when they told me not to. It’d probably be helpful if people were given the benefit of the doubt and thought of as ignorant rather than a miserable old asshat out to ruin your day.

Excellent - Thanks for the responses everyone.

Just to note on a few items;

I have known some retarded people and it really is offensive to them, yes. I don’t think [most] people will dispute that. But again, to throw such a fit over a movie is a little over the top. What’s funny is that the two older ladies who were there helping (one, my Prof.) were then talking about Obama’s comments about his bowling scores and how he should be on the Special Olympics or something. They said it was wrong, but crooked their heads to the side and said “Oh well, people make mistakes!” Which kind of stunned me.

Again, I’m all down for simple spreading awareness about people being more coscious about what they’re saying and when, but when it’s motivated by a fucking Ben Stiller comedy, it made me feel like a whore.

Although my prof did bring up something interesting, (which I’ll never try,) but she was saying that the next time you hear someone say something is “gay,” “retarded,” etc., to ask them what about it is gay. I think the query itself is kind of retarded (…) but I know that’s one of those things, for me, that every time I said the word for the rest of the day I would mentally revert back to that question.

I don’t know…I have mixed feelings about this one. While I do empathize with the handicapped population, I don’t call them retarded. That’s something I’ve never done. Handicapped, special, autistic, etc., but never retarded. Now for those people out there whom the word fits, ie-people who do or say stupid things with or without specific intent, I openly call them retarded. The shoe typically fits.

I think the word “retarded” has evolved into referring to someone with their mental capacities intact but exercise and participating in behaviors that can be interpreted otherwise. i.e. “did you just try to do a back flip with a shirt over your face? Dude, you’re retarded.” Or a song or some other popular medium of entertainment that subscribes to the lowest common denominator. i.e. “Did you just hear the new Soulja Boy song?” “Yea. It’s pretty fucking retarded.”

I mean, come the fuck on. That petition is pretty much inherently retarded. If your prof. thinks she’s going to get a word “banned” by having people who really don’t care and just want that creepy guy who seems a leeetle too into comics and needs the extra credit out of their face so they sign a piece of paper on a clipboard, she might be retarded.

anyways, one of my friends told me some stupid joke: “what’s the difference between a bowling ball and your sister? nothing they both get fingered, thrown in the gutter and always come back for more”

anyways, when he told me that joke i saw brandon about 30 feet in front of me, i say “hey steve go tell brandon that joke”

steve told brandon the joke then got punched in the face twice and yelled at. owned.
Using the word “anyways” twice in the same post makes YOU retarded.
The word is “ANYWAY”.

I think political correctness in general is fucking gay and retarded. People need to chill the fuck down and stop thinking they’re so important they shouldn’t be made fun of.

A good example of this is in Russell Peters’ Red White and Brown he’s doing his act, making fun of each race seperately, then when he gets to the black jokes nobody laughs and he calls them out on it because everyone laughed at the asian and white jokes, but for some reason the black jokes were taboo? Fuck that.

I do agree, and I’m not sure if I elaborated on this or not in my post, but this was actually a National campaign of sorts. She was saying there’s an official website and blah blah… apparently there were local news stations all over campus and newspapers in the city covering it, but whatever.

I know whatever organization is actually organizing all of it is LITERALLY trying to get the word ‘retarded’ banned. I don’t know how that works, but hey… I got my extra credit.

And being the “online grammar checker” makes you retarded.

Anyways, if the word “anyways” is in a dictionary, then i can pretty much use the word all i want in the right context.

Obviously I will not use the word retarded infront of a person with an actual handicap, it’s just street slang that I’ve picked up over time. When I use it I don’t picture someone with Down Syndrome or w/e.

It really doesn’t matter. What you’re saying is, “______ has a mental handicap.” Or, “_______ is slowed down.”

Learn English. Then try again.

I’m glad your now using the word which describe people with mental disabilities as a synonym for fuck. Awesome.

It’s like saying, “That class is gay.” Is the class happy–cheery even!? Or does the class like to make out with other classes of the same sex? I just don’t know. Words is confusing.

NOTE: I’m not offended. I think people should just realize what they are saying. That’s all.
Ok smart ass, so next time you say something is “fucked up” do you mean that whatever you are talking about is having sex?

Or maybe next time you say “I don’t give a shit”, you really are saying you don’t care about poop?

Learn English then try again. I think people should just realize what they are saying, that’s all.

I thought for the sake of the movie it worked.

In life I think it is thrown around all too often and there really is no appreciation for the struggle of the mentally handicapped. Sensitivity is not the issue. Its about respect.

To have a political movement come from something that happened in a movie is pretty fucking stupid. Banning anything for the sake of being politically correct is offensive to me.

Glad you got the extra credit

When you bring up news stations covering it I picture Asian reporter Tricia Takanawa on campus getting tackled by a kid with Downs and using the “politically correct” term to describe it.

i live in germany and after school you can choose between go to the army for 9 months or do civil services. i opted for the last one and worked in a school for mental challenged children…they used to call each other retarded. i really think it comes down on how you use it. if you are trying to offend some special kid, or just kidding with your friends. its like calling your friends son of a bitch, if you now each other both laugh about it, but i would never go to my neighboor and say: “whats up, son of a bitch!”

I have to agree with this.

On the note of the teacher, people that tend to get overly pasionate about their ideals come off more like annoying idiots and often do more to hurt the very movement they are apart of.

I think this is the central problem. Not just with this issue but with many issues. People love telling others what to do, but don’t get out and help others or go outside their own comfort zones to improve themselves. This of course is like the road to hell - paved with good intentions but it leads right to the hell of restrictions on freedom and progress.

I have learned I have no patience anymore for people who want to tell others how to live. Since they often don’t live the same values. For instance I’m sure the prof. had no trouble insulting and belittling people who used the word “retard”. She doesn’t care about communicating effectively like she claims, she just wants to create a protected class.

After reading Starship Troopers and thinking about what he writes there about what it means to contribute to society, I really started rethinking what I do. I’ve made a few small changes is all not much , but it’s enough for me to learn I’ve found helping people actually feels better than getting angry with people I don’t even know.

That was the most pointless story and barely relevant to the topic at hand.

People do need to realize what they are saying. Retard is a derogatory term for a specific group of people. So if the majority of people are fine with the use of this term, why do they then care if someone uses n-gger, sp-c, f-g, j-p, and so on? These are all derogatory terms for a specific group of people so why are these not allowed but retard is?

If your argument is that it is because retard has become part of every day language, all of the terms I listed above also use to be part of everyday language. I wouldn’t even try and use the arguement that these people never felt the punishment as the other groups given that they have been killed, jailed, or in general hidden from the general population since the start of time.

So please tell me why this term is OK to use but not the others.

This thread is retarded.

Later today, I’m going to retard the timing on my v8. Oopss!!
