I’ll throw my two cents in about AC/DC. I’m not a huge fan but I don’t think they suck either. What I don’t like about them is the drumming, specifically on Back in Black and afterwards. As a drummer, the drums are the first thing I listen to when I hear music and their drummer plays virtually the same basic beat for most of their songs.
Drumming doesn’t have to be exotic, complicated shit to sound good; it just has to groove and preferably remain “in the pocket” when it comes to funk and/or straight-ahead rock. AC/DC obviously falls into the latter category, but it doesn’t really groove because the beats are TOO simple. Meg White from the White Stripes plays really, really basic shit, but it’s different with her. The White Stripes are a very minimalist-type band driven exclusively by Jack White’s fucking amazing guitar playing, and for them her simple, 1/4 note-driven drumming works really well.
But AC/DC’s music has a lot of room for some more intricate drumming than what their drummer plays. There’s definitely room for some flashier fills, maybe some more open/closed hi-hat, some ghost notes on the snare and would it fucking kill the guy to throw in some bass drum triplets every once in a while, a la John Bonham? That’s my only complaint with AC/DC. Brian Johnson (is that his name?) sounds like shit most of the time on vocals on top of everything else, so I’m on the verge of hating post-Bon Scott AC/DC at times, but I can get into some of their earlier shit, especially TNT, She’s Got the Jack and Jailbreak.
