That I can’t agree with. Flexibility can often be essential to getting your training done. There is, however, a difference between rescheduling training because of family or work (being flexible) and simply not feeling like doing it (being lazy).
x2
Flexibility is essential, but “flexible” in this context should mean “something really important will keep me from the gym today, so I will work out tomorrow instead and still meet my weekly goal of 3+ gym sessions” rather than “I don’t feel like it today, so I guess 2 sessions will have to cut it this week.”
Yeah, to clarify, I’m talking about the latter. Things come up and unless you’re training for Mr. Olympia then other things can take priority.
Sometimes though, you just have to bitch slap yourself and go get after it, no matter how much you don’t feel like it.
I don’t think anyone should be married to the gym. But without a certain level of commitment, what’s the point?
there’s always a trade off with just how much “life” you want to sacrifice for the gym, and you have to decide what that is.
An example (which I think I’ve used before but whatevs):
A client of mine, who was in good shape, was saying how she’d love to lose that last little bit of fat, but struggles because she can’t stop eating chocolate. So I asked her what would make her happier: having the last bit of fat gone and not being able to eat chocolate, or having a little fat and being able to eat chocolate.
She said “chocolate,” which is totally fair enough. Her life’s better with the chocolate, so she’s happy not to sacrifice that particular piece of “life” for the gym.
Everyone has to strike a balance, and that was hers.
This is something thats been bugging me for a while. Everyone is free to make their own choices, they just have to live by them. In your case, if you choose not to go to the gym (And I’ve made the same choice plenty over the last half year), then you have to accept you won’t get the results you want. If you can live with that, fine, that’ a sign that you’ve got your priorities right in life.
Thanks friends. I think I was just feeling a little flat. A weekend away has recharged my batteries.
Got me thinking about this kid at my gym. Works out 6 days out 7. Arrives at the gym at 6pm, and come straight from work. Often stays there until 9pm. I hardly see him lift. He spends more time eating bananas and staring into space. While the kid does look like he does lift, he isn’t anything overly impressive.
Make me think how he fits the rest of his life in…

Man, I am a mechanic in the Marine Corps currently tasked out with getting the trucks from the 31st MEU up to speed. My Platoon Sgt is a Staff Sgt who is jacked and can run 3 miles in 18:00 min. We have to work from 7AM- 8PM and the Plt Sgt has to work even more to take care of us, yet he still trains for an hour or so every day, so I try to mimic him and not give a shit, just concentrate.
