Bagsy's Training Log

I see nothing wrong with them lol it was a freaking PR. My heavy front squats look the same, we just have long legs is all

And congrats!

I could afford the dog no problem, but I am struggling to afford to pay for all the things he has eaten and destroyed !!

Have a much stronger back than legs :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Yes, gotta love having giraffe legs and orangutan arms. Thanks!

Ha, I can imagine. And I suspect his accomodations if you go on vacation and don’t have any available dog-loving friends are not cheap, either.

We fostered a dog the the Australian Border Force who will hopefully get selected to work as a sniffer dog. Luckily for us they have them back at their training centre when we need to go away.

@Bagsy you say you have a stronger back than legs , but the PR video posted looks to me as though thats not quite the case! You have great leg and hip drive out the hole, then you hit your sticking point and as you say , great back strength to finish it off.
IMO from what i see , the only issue there was form break down . . . not staying tight enough and driving with your upperback from the get go!? I know its easier said than done, and you probably are trying!!

Not a knock at all , great PR, but just pointing out what the video tells me!

Perfectly suited for Sumo deads then

That’s great. I think I remember seeing some photos of him in your log. I love living vicariously through any dog owner.

No offense taken, appreciate your input. I bet insufficient tightness is a culprit, but I still think the primary one is weak legs. I would have dropped the bar if my back did not help me. On the second rep my hips take over my quads, and my chest falls forward, not unlike what CWS describes in this video around 11:00:

And I’ve always been a good morning squatter. It’s okay though, I’m not upset with myself or anything. I still think front squats are great

I think I have good leverages for deadlifting in general, yet sumo is not for me. It bothers my hips. Plus, not to knock on sumo pullers (I realize both lifts have their challenges), but I do think conventional is a little awesome-er

My aunt got my dog this beautiful crocheted penguin toy when we first got him.

A few days later people were wondering why my dog was playing with a mop head…

ES Day 14

Pullup +3kgx3x3
Front squat 100x2x5
Press 55x2x5
Standing ab wheel progression 2x5
KB swing 24kgx2x25

Tabata run (mostly uphill) + 800m cooldown

Feeling extra lethargic today. I planned to go do some hill sprints, but considering it takes a nontrivial time to get there and that there’s a heat warning in my area, I decided to get out the door ASAP and do something because the temperature climbs rapidly. I told myself I would do a mile time trial but chickened out. Tabata is unpleasant enough without the risk of heat stroke, so it was fine.

I have heavier singles tomorrow. Hopefully I can get a good night’s sleep and feel good enough to attempt a 140 front squat again. This program has been going by pretty quickly. I need to spend the weekend figuring out what to do next

Also @Cyrrex i think I’m a lot farther off from a full standing ab wheel rep. ROM probably only halfway there; I’m only doing the easier part of the movement. A few months ago I was basically doing the same thing but then finishing the full rep from the knees. Maybe I should go back to doing that. I’m not sure.

Thanks for posting that ab wheel video—I’ve been wondering about that, as I’ve only been able to go from-knees for quite awhile myself. I think I might give the movement you’re doing a shot.

I might also try the ramped rollouts from this article:

Tip: How to Get Your First Standing Rollout

Not sure where your current movement fits relative to the ramp progression—maybe you’re beyond that already, but if not, maybe it’ll help.

I’m lazy and don’t want to build a ramp just for ab wheels, but this guy likes ramps and is probably the best ab wheeler on the planet:

Hmm, I like @SvenG 's suggestion there, but it sorta implies that you have a ramp. Or some surface you can stand on in a deficit position. Easier said than done.

The problem with these is that the force required between your entire core, your shoulders and lats exponentially increases as the wheel rolls out in front of you. If it were me, I would let it roll out until I fell flat on my face, fighting it with everything I had, like a negative pullup. Which is easy for me to say, having never tried falling flat on my face in that way.

But yeah, the ramp would seem to be a good choice if you can figure it ou.

ES Day 15

Pullup +0x1, +3kgx1, +10x1, +20x1, +30x2x1 (questionable reps)
Front squat 35x4, 85x1, 105x1, 125x3x1
Press 35x5, 50x1, 55x1, 60x1, 65x2x1
Standing ab wheel progression 2x5
KB swing 26kgx25,20

2x10 pushups
50 band pull aparts

So, I mixed the rotation up in my mind and wasn’t supposed to do heavy singles today. But I slept well for the first time in about a week and felt decent, so I went did them. Didn’t pan out well for me on squats or presses. I’m onto the next hole in my belt though, and I reckon being a touch lighter helped me eek out the pullups. That’s almost 25% of my bodyweight though!

I’ve felt enveloped in a more-serious-than-usual existential crisis this whole year. Yesterday I was totally surprised and pleased to learn that my research won first prize in a major competition this week, and there’s even a nontrivial (to me) cash prize. And I’m finally going on vacation in a few days. So, feeling a little better.
