Bagsy's Training Log

Did you ever try using straps? I’m very mobile – was able to front rack on my first ever try – so unfortunately cannot offer much advice. I’ve only a couple times tried the cross arm grip, and I think it would seriously limit the amount of weight I could support.

I’ve not watched it, but I think JTS has good content, so maybe worth a shot if you genuinely want to achieve the front rack:

Ugh, it’s been way, way, way too long since I’ve taken time off let alone gone anywhere. Thank you. Unfortunately I still have 2.5 weeks to go…

I echo Bagsy on using straps. I first used straps and slowly (I forget how long it took) got to the point where I didn’t need them anymore.

I previously didn’t use straps but my front rack was never great, I use straps now and it definitely helps a ton. Just watched that video you posted, think I’ll try some of that positional work to see if I cant get to a good spot!

ES Day 6

Pullups +3kgx2x5
Front squat 90x5, 105x5
Press 55x2x5
Standing ab wheel progression 2x5
KB swing 21kgx2x30

50 band pull aparts

Tabata assault bike 39.3 cal

Contrary to Dan’s suggestion, today’s session felt difficult even after a day of rest. Feeling a little leaner but am going to have a carb refeed today to fuel tomorrow’s heavier singles.

ES Day 7

Pullups +0x2, +5x1, +10x1, +15x1, +20x1 (PR), +25x1 (PR)
Front squat 85x1, 105x1, 115x1, 125x1, 135x1 (PR), 140x0
Press 35x5, 55x1, 60x1, 65x1, 67.5x1, 70x1
Standing ab wheel progression 2x5
KB swing 21kgx2x30

A little cheaty on the pull up rep but counting it. I knew a 140 front squat was ambitious but tried it anyway. Every day I become more convinced that my shoulders do not work. Overall not terrible considering the calorie deficit. The front squat PR surprised me.

It counted. Nice PR.

Killing it as always.

Only a small minority of adult women can do 1 with bodyweight. I don’t know how much you weight, but this has got to be 15+% over. Good work!

A mile. We call this a mile

Awesome session!! Congrats on some well earned PRs

Pull ups: The fuck you’re talking about with cheating?
Front squats: Flawless!
Press: Loved the grind!

You might do that. But you are wrong.

Awesome work. PRs everywhere.
And you aren’t kidding around, throwing weights in that backpack and going for it. The pullups were particularly impressive.
You got that grindy press too.

Thanks all for the kind words. I’m glad that I post here and, equally importantly, see what everyone else is up to in their logs. My lifting progress is slow, but I think beyond my first months of training, my time spent here has coincided with the most PRs.

Roughly 20% over

If I wanted to be pedantic, I think a mile is actually 1609 m.

Near the end of the rep I cheated a little to ensure my chin was 100% above the bar  not enough to discount it though

Trying to make my front squats move like yours!

I don’t have a belt for weighted dips/pullups, so it’s the go-to.

It also never PRs :frowning: but yes I’m good at grinding reps in general hahaha

ES Day 8

Pullup +0x6,4
Front squat 85x10
Press 45x10
Kneeling ab wheel 1x10

50 band pull aparts

5 hill sprints, end with 2x800m cooldown (stopped halfway to do some pushups)

Very little energy today, and the brutal humidity did not help.

I know exactly what you are talking about, but it is 0% cheating. Knees coming up is natural on a hard weighted PU, it wasn’t like you kipped your way up or anything. It was close enough even before that last burst anyway.

Thanks, I agree with you. Sometimes I’m hard on myself just because.

Specifically in regards to pullups, the conventional wisdom is wrong. It is a full body exercise and a terrific core builder. If you weight it, you put more stress on all the muscles involved, including the core. How does the body deal with that? Body flexing the core muscles involved, just like you did. It is just your abs trying to find some mechanical advantage. Sure, if you do it super violently then you get a tiny kip, but that is not what I saw.

Not like that idiot Jeff whatshisface talks about (the Athlean X dude). His advice literally makes them harder.

So you admit you watch his videos?

I admit to watching one video and forming an immediate opinion. Subsequent partial views of other videos confirmed that opinion. That guy’s whole schtick is “I am better than you at everything, here is a video of something that will amaze you and I will convince it is the best way to do it even if it is totally wrong and you will fail please send money”.

My abs get incredibly sore after I do 25 reps of chin-ups in as few a set as possible, so I believe what Dan John says about pull-up/chin-up being the greatest ab workout.
