Lots of good tips. The world of camping clothing was a completely new one… ditching cotton was a little hard haha.
Yes, and after you realise that there is other things that will keep you way warmer, it is hard not to look like a lumberjack all the time.

Wife and I going to Burlingame State Park in RI for a camping trip (tent) beginning of Aug. We will be doing more beach stuff than hiking, but the state park has some decent trails and I’m sure I can get her to take some morning hikes with me.

Going backpacking with the girlfriend in August to Willmore Wilderness park, which will be my first real camping trip. I was thinking Banf or Jasper area, but she locked onto this as it is cheaper by a few hundred dollars.

I’m a little uneasy as I’m used to camping with a vehicle within a few minutes, rather than a five to six hour hike.

Campers-- Carry if you got it. If you don’t, good luck-- the ‘food chain’ ain’t in your favor anymore.

Game wardens kill bear that attacked camper

ELDORADO NATIONAL FOREST, Calif.â??State wildlife officials say a bear that attacked a man at a campground in Eldorado National Forest has been shot and killed by wardens.

A spokeswoman for the California Department of Fish and Game says after dogs tracked the bear, wardens shot it around 6:15 p.m. Friday.

The animal, described as a 1-year-old black bear, was identified by its paw print. It was located about a a quarter-mile from where it slashed a man’s face at a campground near Union Valley Reservoir around 2 a.m. Friday.

Fish and Game spokeswoman Kirsten Macintyre says the man, who was armed with a .45-caliber pistol, scared the bear off by firing a shot.

The man, who has not been named, required 26 stitches after the attack.

The campground where the attack took place is in a remote area about 60 miles northeast of Sacramento.

We have had quite a few bear sightings around southwestern PA this year. They aren’t very big though, 200 lbs. range.

I’ve been out for a few fishing trips this year, but nothing major. I had a nice day out on the Youghiogheny on Sunday catching small mouth bass. It isn’t really hiking though. The trail is old railroad bed groomed with pulverized limestone.

Hey. It’s summer. Anyone doing anything, going anywhere, fishing, hiking, camping, whatever?
I wish I had time. I’m craving getting out into nature.
Maybe if I stopped posting on T-Nation, it’ll free up some time.

Nah!

If you can, you should make your way up to North Mountain sometime this year- that’s where we’ve gone camping a couple times last year. This is the picture from the top of the mountain at dusk- taken with cell.

That’s the northern part of the Hudson (relative to you and I) in the distance there. Awesome.

Thanks, I’ll look it up!

Been doing Overlook Mtn (elev 3140 ft) in Woodstock almost every weekend. Its a quick hike. Really just do it as a leg & cardio workout. Actually just started using a weight vest as of two weeks ago. Albeit, just 20 lbs right now. Get some strange looks. This pic is from the top, looking approx. south down on Woodstock with the Ashokan Reservoir behind it.

wow…this thread isnt about random shit that serves no purpose…how boring.

It’s amazing that people haven’t discovered this shit yet.

I went into the city with my girlfriend last January and it was the coldest I’ve ever felt it there- but I had a polypro thermal, a sweater, and a leather jacket, and was absolutely comfortable. Remarkable stuff.

Don’t be uneasy. A life with no adventure is not worth living, you’ll find that being forced to make do with what you got on your back is a liberating, incredible experience.

I’m going to Jockey Hollow in Morristown for some camping next month… it was the place where the Continental troops spent the winter of 1779 there, in the worst conditions imagineable… worse than Valley Forge.

Some of their huts are still there, so it should be a cool experience.

I go hiking as well. Just got back from NC/SC last week where we spent about a week climbing and hiking waterfalls. Unfortunately, I live in South Florida so I don’t get to go hiking as much as I would like too.

Wow. awesome.

I got into a bit of trouble sophomore year of HS and instead of legal repercussions I attended a wilderness program in NC. It was in Pisgah Forest outside of Asheville NC. I’ve camped and hiked for as long as I can remember so I enjoyed the hell out of it, lots of stories and friends from that place. I think the most entertaining story is this-

We were camped on a really high hill, no source of water within ~750 yards, kind of brutal walk uphill from the stream. At night, I woke up in the pitch black and heard a really loud splashing sound. Due to being half asleep it took me a minute to realize that there was no water close enough to hear, so I looked around. There was a fucking raccoon peeing on my sleeping bag right below my chest. It took me a second to scream/shout at it and then it ran off. Being the genius that I am, I chased that bastard. At this wilderness program at night they take your pants and boots to discourage running away. We also werent allowed to know the time, so I chased that fucker for what I thought was like 8 hours. When my counselors found me I was sleeping in a creek bed. They thought it was a half assed attempt at running away until they smelled my sleeping bag. Still have scars on my feet from chasing that thing through the woods.

picture of the shark we caught on a trip a couple weeks back out of Montauk, LI.

also went camping up in the Catskills again. Looking for a new place to, not sure where we’re headed just yet. Looking to do more fishing down the shore very soon.

How’s everyone’s summer? Any good adventures?
