Attention Pool Sharks!

I need help on my game. I’m better than average. I have a problem with shooting long STRAIGHT shots like when the cue ball is on the other end and the ball I’m shooting at is near the pocket. I miss those most of the time but when their closer I still miss sometimes.

I’m still practicing on setting up for the next shot. I know if I hit the ball a little to the right it’ll hit the other ball and bounce to the right and vice versa. how do I practice to get better? What’s a good drill to improve my skills?

Honestly, assuming you are in a major metro area, go to your nearest library. There are tons of books written on the topic and several are full of drills.

For the long shots make sure you are getting your head as close to your cue as possible. Sighting down it like a gun and don’t forget to take into account the angle of approach on the cue ball. A big mistake on a long shot is not to pay attention to where, on the face of the cue, you will actually have contact with the object ball and hit accordingly.

Go to a very urban/run down area…

start shooting pool.

when someone asks to play with you decline and just move tables if they want to run a game amongst friends.

after several nights there will be an old black man who will ask to play with you.

…be prepared to learn many nuances of the game.

you will realize he has been in the bar all along watching you… he is now your sifu/sensei

“when the student is ready the master will appear”

lol It’s already happened. He played me showing me the ropes of the game teaching me english. Should I work on shooting long straight shots shooting in a straight line before I learn the more advanced stuff?

go get books. Same idea as some of the people here keep reading and reading and they expect to improve.

Play. Play a lot.

If you can, practice some of the time on a full size snooker table.

When you go back to playing on a pool table, every shot will feel like a short one.

The keys to long straight shots is concentration, stroke and being able to hit the ball dead center (for starters). A great practice drill is put an object ball on the dot and the cue ball on the same spot on the head string. Shot the object ball into either corner without scratching, this will promote a great smooth stroke and if you hit it off center 99% of the time you will scratch.

Once you’ve managed to perfect this shot you will have the stroke to make straight shots. You can then work on putting english on your straigh shots. I did this drill for hours on end and became 100% better of a player.

I told him to get a book for drills. Not to teach him how to play.

Lighten up.

OMG SHARKS!@!@~~

dont think he was referring to you just giving him a warning that reading alone isn’t going to do it.

but yes just play your ass off, i shoot pool at LEAST once a week. I’m far from a ‘pool shark’, but the only thing that had me getting good was

1- old black dude/miyagi lessons
2- playing consistently

i lived in a house for a little while that had a pool table id practice drills and difficult shots easily 3-4x a day. Thats what it really takes just like anything else.

MY GOD LOOK AT YOUR AVATAR

How stupid is this. I went to books a million and the only pool book they had was a novel telling the life stories of pro pool shooters! I would expect this of all the stores to atleast have one good book on pool. Now I don’t know where else to look.

The only place to find real pool knowledge is on the table. Read all you want, it won’t make you a better player. When I first started playing I read everything I could find, knew tons about the game but still sucked, it wasn’t until I spent real solid time on the table that I got better. Wanna get real good, play on the 9ft tables or even a snooker table with pool balls, you run a rack of pool balls on a snooker table and you’re a damn good player.

I know I have to practice but I need to know what to practice. I only practice long straight shots and aiming them for now. Sometimes I throw 3 balls on the table and try to hit them without missing. I need more insight on how to up my skills. I need some drills to practice.
