Attempts at Strongman

5/30

Front squat, cloth belt, knee sleeve
295x2x8
Felt surprisingly easy for not front squatting or squatting in general as often as usual. I’m assuming some of it has to do with my higher body weight.

Nice!!

Do you use high handles on the trap bar?

A month or two ago I used a trap bar for the first time in years, and I did not find it to be much easier than a traditional barbell deadlift.

Regardless, 650lbs is hella heavy.

Usually I note it in my training, that time was high handles. With those, I can kind of check out mentally and just pull hard. I appreciate feeling the strain of pulling something that feels heavy on occasion, especially when nothing in my low back feels compromised.

We recently got more metal 45’s at my gym, so there may be some heavier pulls in the future. If you have a trap bar, a bit of friendly competition would be welcome.

I’m always down for a friendly competition!
Here was my last attempt at the trap bar.

Might take me a few attempts to catch up with the low handles. I’ve pulled 710 with the high handles (800 might be in the cards due to having enough thin plates, but maybe I’m full of it) but never over 6 (maybe not even 550, not sure) on low. Being the ego fueled creature that I am, I never thought to attempt a max on the more difficult variation on the same bar. I’ll take a test run sometime next week

It may be a few weeks of being in cast and then a few weeks to get back into the swing of things before I can join the challenge though…

Gives me a chance to catch up, no worries.

5 rounds of:
Single arm cable tricep extension, supinated x 20
18 lb KB curl x 20
Cable upright row x 20

Lots of calisthenics the past couple days, couple hours each day, more things than I am willing to list or remember.

My anaerobic capacity seems lacking, as I’ve thrown up a couple times during training while not breathing too hard. Lungs feel good, which is rare for me and my smashed nose. But fatigue has been really potent outside of the more traditional heavy breathing. Woke up with a some pretty sharp pain in my right hamstring, but has tapered off a bit after a couple hours on my feet and some stretching.

Lots of singles, wanting to practice technique with a barbell. All felt pretty good, hardest part was catching after the single

High bar squat, beltless

225x5x2
275x5x2
315x5x2

Dumbbell clean and strict press, cleaning each rep

Apparently the higher handles make all the difference for me, 530 today felt heavier than 650 on high handles…some work for me to do, I guess

Felt pretty good for not benching with any consistency as of late. Technique is a little shaky, so any reps beyond a single start to feel a little off. Maybe good for 315-330, or a double at 300.

Push ups with feet elevated on ball SS/w chin up

Single arm tricep extension and KB lateral raise while holding the bell
X a bunch

Last week had less lifting, more martial arts. Was surprised how much better I felt during drilling and such without the fatigue from lifting.

Picking up a borderline unused Airdyne for $20 today. My constant checking of craigslist and similar garage sale type postings is paying off.

Figured out a bit of clean technique today. I seemed to be able to pull longer, making the catch more comfortable and the lift feel easier.

Played with new-to-me airdyne for a while. It’s an older model, so the resistance isn’t modular. I have a couple ideas of how to increase resistance, maybe more/wider diameter fan blades? Any other thoughts would be appreciated.

No idea how the bike works, but assuming the fan spins and uses some type of bearing and retaining device to hold it all and let it spin… anyway to tighten that up? Slightly over tighten it to create more drag ?

Traditional-ish bike chain (fixed gear) drives the fan. There’s friction points adjusted by a tensioner knob to lock the fan in place when the bike is not in use, but those points are basically just bare screws pressing on a smooth metal surface. My thoughts were to either add fan blades to increase drag, or block off the majority of the fan somehow to force the output air through a smaller channel. Other than pprobably misused 101 level physics, I have no idea or experience with what would work well.

Woah

Wear a weights vest lol
